Bodda Getta Daily Brew 1/26: Who's Cutting Onions?

DeWanna Bonner becomes fifth player Auburn women's basketball player to have her jersey retired

Good morning. With tears in her eyes, DeWanna Bonner pointed to the Neville Arena rafters, where a spotlight shined on her No. 24.

“This is my home,” she said. “I grew up here. This is my family atmosphere, this is where I get my love, my joy.”

Auburn honored its all-time scoring leader Sunday before the Tigers defeated Alabama, the fifth player in program history to have her jersey retired, joining Carolyn Jones, Ruthie Bolton, Becky Jackson and Vickie Orr.

“This has been probably one of the best weekends of my life,” Bonner said at halftime after an on-court recognition of Auburn women’s basketball players from the 1970s to the 2020s. “I bleed orange and blue. Blood, sweat and tears here for four years. It was all worth it for this moment.”

🔼 Jeff’s Juggernaut. The No. 13 Auburn gymnastics team is set to travel to No. 4 Arkansas to take on the Razorbacks Friday night to go head to head at 7 p.m. CT in Barnhill Arena, and the meet will be streamed on SEC Network+.

"Arkansas is going to have a great crowd and have proven they are a great team early in the season," head coach Jeff Graba said. "If we do a good job on Friday, I think we can compete with anybody in the country."

The Tigers are closing out the month of January having faced a gauntlet of opponents. Not a single meet in the season-opening month was against a team outside the top 10.

"We're in a really good spot right now," Graba said. "Physically, I think we're doing really good gymnastics."

Auburn returns to Neville Arena on February 2, hosting its first-ever quad meet in the regular season. The Tigers will welcome Temple, Fisk and Talladega to the Plains, and the meet will kick off at 7 p.m. CT.

🔼 Order on the Court. No. 14 Auburn will play for a chance to participate in the 2024 ITA National Indoor Team Championships over the weekend in Durham, North Carolina, at ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Tigers' first match will be at 5:30 p.m. CT against Denver on Friday, and their second match will be against either host school Duke or Princeton on Saturday.

Last season, Auburn hosted ITA Kickoff Weekend and defeated both UCSB and UCF to punch its ticket to the Indoor Championships in Seattle.

Denver will enter the weekend with a 2-0 record, No. 15 Duke will enter with a 4-0 record and Princeton with a 1-0 record. The Blue Devils have four ranked singles players, while Princeton has one ranked doubles team and one ranked singles player.

The weekend will begin on Friday with Duke and Princeton at 2 p.m. CT, prior to the Tigers' match against Denver. The winners of each respective match will face each other in the championship match on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT, while the losers will follow in the consolation match at 6 p.m. CT.

🔼 All in Favour. Auburn Track & Field looks to continue its strong start to the indoor season as the Tigers head to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 26-27 at the Randal Tyson Track Center. The meet will start with the men's heptathlon on Friday at 11:35 a.m. CT and Saturday at 10 a.m. CT.

The men will go toe-to-toe with nine nationally ranked teams and nine SEC opponents, including the reigning indoor champion, Arkansas. The Auburn women will also have to face the reigning indoor women's SEC champions as well as 11 nationally-ranked programs.

"We would like to see some things develop more on the track," Auburn track & field head coach Leroy Burrell said. "On the men's side, we will give Favour Ashe an opportunity to confirm his performance from the dual meet a couple of weeks ago. I want to see how he performs with more competition."

The team opened the season in Birmingham at the inaugural Harvey Glance Tide & Tiger Dual Meet, where Ashe logged the No. 1 time, nationally, in the 60m at 6.53 and was awarded the SEC Men's Co-Runner of the Week following the performance.
