Bodda Getta Daily Brew 1/29: Who Let the Dawgs In?

After winning the last 2 home games in SEC play, Tigers WBB hosts Georgia for We Back Pat Night

Good morning. After a week off from competition, the Auburn women's basketball team is back in action tonight as they host Georgia at Neville Arena. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CT.

Doors open at 5 p.m. CT, and fans are encouraged to wear white. It's the annual We Back Pat game, and the team will wear special warmup shirts to honor legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt and highlight awareness for Alzheimer's research.

Auburn (13-6, 2-4 SEC) has won its last two home games in SEC play, the last being a 78-65 victory over Alabama last Sunday, where 6,075 fans – the third-largest women's basketball crowd at Neville Arena – saw DeWanna Bonner's No. 24 raised to the rafters.

Auburn also welcomes the nation's top team to Neville Arena Thursday night when No. 1 South Carolina visits for a 7 p.m. CT tip.

🔼 Records Left in the Dust. Auburn senior Ryan Kinnane broke a 42-year-old school record in the men's mile, and freshman Max Hardin set the freshman school mark in the same event to highlight the final day of competition for the Auburn track and field team at the Razorback Invitational Saturday.

Kinnane crossed in 3:58.28 to break Roger Jones's time of 3:58.47 set in 1982, becoming the second Tiger in school history to run a sub-four-minute mile indoors. A native of Wichita, Kansas, Kinnane ran a strong back half to separate himself and win his section while finishing third overall en route to posting the nation's 19th fastest time this season.

Hardin, racing in his first collegiate indoor mile, ran a 4:01.50 to break the previous freshman school record of 4:03.50 set by Felix Kiboiywo in 2007.

Auburn will have a week off before returning to action Feb. 9-10 when it competes at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C. and the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts.

🔼 Let’s Be Frank. Single-game reserved tickets and add-on access to Auburn baseball’s new Hall of Fame Club went on sale to the public earlier this week.

A tribute to Auburn, Southeastern Conference and Major League Baseball great Frank Thomas, who is the first player from the SEC enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Hall of Fame Club will add premium seats and standing-room space at field level to go along with a 3,000-square foot climate-controlled club space featuring food, drinks, televisions, restrooms, and indoor seating.

“Named in honor of one of the greatest to ever play our sport in Frank Thomas, I think this space will live up to its namesake and will give the Auburn Family a taste of what’s to come at Plainsman Park,” head coach Butch Thompson said.

Read the article for more on what this section will entail, along with pricing options.

🔼 Down Goes Duke. No. 14 Auburn defeated 15th-ranked Duke in the championship match at ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday in Durham, North Carolina. With the victory, the Tigers have earned a bid into the 2024 ITA National Team Indoor Championships for the third year in a row.

Auburn will play in its home opener with a doubleheader featuring Texas Tech and South Alabama on Feb. 4  before making the trip to the ITA Indoor Championships in Seattle, which begins on Feb. 9.

🔼 No. 8 Auburn came up short at Mississippi State on Saturday in what was a physical, back-and-forth battle between two of the SEC's top defensive teams.

The final score, 64-58, was the largest lead by either team all game.

"It was as physical as we thought," Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl said. "They're a really athletic team. Obviously, they played really good defensively. But we didn't play well. We didn't execute very well. Give Mississippi State credit. They did a great job."

After back-to-back road games, Auburn (16-4, 5-2) will return home this week to face Vanderbilt in Neville Arena. The game will tip off at 8 p.m. CT on Wednesday.

🔼 Just a Smidge. The No. 13 Auburn gymnastics team earned a 196.675 to set a season-best road score Friday night but ultimately fell to host and No. 4 Arkansas in Barnhill Arena. The Razorbacks finished with a 197.225.

"These are the positives we can take away,” head coach Jeff Graba said, noting the tough environment. “There were bright spots that I'm really happy with. I'm hoping we can build off of these moments as we get ready for another competition next week at home."

Auburn floor continued to shine as the squad put together another solid score, going 49.325 overall in the third rotation.

The Tigers return to Neville Arena for a quad meet, hosting Temple, Fisk and Talladega on February 2. The contest kicks off at 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed on SEC Network+.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Frank Thomas’s nickname is “The Big Hurt”

You might recall that Thomas initially accepted a scholarship to play football at Auburn University in 1986. Despite an injury that could have jeopardized his football scholarship, Auburn continued his funding, and baseball became his sole sport.
