Bodda Getta Daily Brew 11/20: Urban Legends

Auburn overtook ND and St. Bonaventure on Friday to win Brooklyn's Legends Classic.

Good morning. Many have said that basketball head coach Bruce Pearl has made Auburn a basketball school, and BP will tell you that Auburn is an “everything school.” After watching the Tigers back on the same court and hoisting the same trophy as they did four years ago as the winners of the Legends Classic, it’s hard to deny the hoops hype.

This year's Auburn team beat St. Bonaventure 77-60 in the championship game and outscored their two opponents in Brooklyn (St. Bonaventure and Notre Dame) by a combined 41 points.

🔼 Broome’s Brooklyn Beatdown. It’s time to take a deeper dive into the Tigers’ success at the Legends Classic.

"That's a good win," Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl said. "That's a good St. Bonaventure team. Everybody knows what a great coach Mark Schmidt is and the job that he does. I'm proud of our kids for making history."

The Tigers were led by Johni Broome, who had a team-high 18 points Friday and was named the Tournament MVP after averaging 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games.

"Honestly, I didn't know that I would get MVP," Broome said. "I was just happy for my teammates, especially Dylan Cardwell.”

Four years ago, it was Isaac Okoro who made Sportscenter's Top 10 with his dunk in the Legends Classic championship. This year, it was Jaylin Williams

The fifth-year senior finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds to record his second career double-double. He was named to the Legends Classic All-Tournament Team along with Broome after averaging 11.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in Auburn's two victories.

With the win, it marks the second straight year Auburn has won an in-season tournament after winning the Cancun Challenge last season. The Tigers will return home to Neville Arena next week and face Alabama A&M on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

Some Quick Hits on the Match:

  • Auburn's win over LSU was its first since 2016 and its first sweep since 1999.

  • The sweep was Auburn's fourth of the season and second in SEC play.

  • The Tigers reached 12.5 blocks for the second straight match and reached double digits for the 13th time this season.

  • Madison Scheer (10 kills) reached double digits for the 21st time this season.

  • Sarah Morton (12 digs) reached double digits for the 13th time this year.

  • Akasha Anderson (14 kills, 11 digs) notched her seventh double-double of the year.

"We really dominated, which was great to see,” said Coach Crouch. “We've been talking about playing with some more consistency, and we've been talking about playing with a little more urgency, regardless of what the score is.”

Auburn remains home on Wednesday, Nov. 22, when Alabama comes to Neville Arena. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. CT. The match will also be streamed live on SEC Network Plus.

🔼 Pulling an All-Knighter. Auburn women's basketball heads out on its second road trip of the season as the Tigers will face the UCF Knights tonight in Orlando, Florida. Game time is 6 p.m. CT at Addition Financial Arena.

The Tigers (3-1) look to bounce back from a home loss to California Friday night. UCF (2-0) has not played since last Monday, when the Knights earned a win over Division II Anderson.

In the last Tigers-Knights matchup, Honesty Scott-Grayson scored 22 points, and the Auburn women's basketball team steamrolled past previously unbeaten UCF 86-46.

An Auburn win would be the third straight win over a Big 12 opponent and improve the Tigers to 3-0 all-time against UCF.

Auburn WBB will be back inside Neville Arena on the Sunday after the Iron Bowl when they take on Alabama A&M. Game time is 2 p.m. CT on Nov. 26.

🔼 Fair Weather to Partly Cloudy. A long winning streak can be ultra-difficult to break, and the Tigers learned that in their loss to the Aggies on Saturday.

Rivaldo Fairweather and Alex McPherson continued their own hot streaks, with Fairweather scoring his sixth touchdown of the season and McPherson kicking his 18th consecutive field goal. Still, New Mexico State earned its seventh straight win by beating Auburn 31-10 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

"As good as last week felt, as complete as we played in all three phases, it was the exact opposite today," Auburn coach Hugh Freeze said.

“They had the right calls at the right time,” Freeze went on to note. “With them controlling the clock, give them credit for that. The effort we had was not what Auburn deserves."

By way of a brief bright spot, Payton Thorne found Fairweather for the sixth time this season, resulting in a 33-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter.

"We just had to wake up and come with a different mindset," Fairweather said. "We're going to take it to practice, watch film and learn from our mistakes. You always learn from your mistakes. We're going to come back 10 times harder."

Auburn (6-5, 3-4) concludes the regular season next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT vs. Alabama in the highly anticipated Iron Bowl on CBS and the Auburn Sports Network.

🔼 Stoffle Brothers Stifle the Swimming Competition. If fans of the Orange and Blue wanted a show in the 200 back, Nate Stoffle and Aidan Stoffle certainly gave it to them. With a little outside smoke in lane eight, Aidan became the first Tiger in program history to swim sub-1:39.00. His 1:38.57 is a new school record, while brother Nate jumped to second all-time with a 1:39.01.

At the end of three grueling days of swimming, both the Auburn Men and Women finished in second place amongst a top-tier group of programs, highlighting a terrific final night of the UGA Fall Invite for the Tigers.

🤔 TIGER TRIVIA

The Whole 109 Yards. Let’s take another look back at the history of the Iron Bowl and its storied rivalry for today’s trivia question.

The year was 2013, and No. 4 Auburn defeated No. 1 Alabama 34–28. With one second remaining and the game tied 28–28, Alabama's freshman kicker Adam Griffith attempted a 57-yard potential game-winning field goal. The kick fell short, but in an epic twist of fate, an Auburn cornerback caught the ball at the back of the end zone and returned it 109 yards for the game-winning touchdown as time expired.

Today’s question—what was the name of that Auburn cornerback?

Think you know the answer? Scroll down to the bottom to find out!

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Chris Davis

The stunning 109-yard return prompted this game to be dubbed the Kick Six Game. The 2013 Iron Bowl won the ESPY Award for "Best Game" of the year in any sport, and the final play by Davis won the ESPY Award for "Best Play" of the year.
