🔼 Game On. Based on preseason predictions, Wednesday's showdown on the Plains between No. 13 Auburn and No. 11 South Carolina was not supposed to be the marquee matchup it's turned out to be.

The Gamecocks, picked by SEC and national reporters to finish last in the league, are tied for first and will bring a seven-game winning streak to Neville Arena. Auburn, picked sixth, is just one game back.

It's the first time in the programs' 50 meetings that both teams are nationally ranked, a credit to Auburn's Bruce Pearl and South Carolina's second-year coach Lamont Paris.

Auburn leads the series against South Carolina 30-19 all-time and won six straight over the Gamecocks.

Seeking to defeat South Carolina for the seventh straight time, Auburn (19-5, 8-3) hosts the Gamecocks (21-3, 9-2) tonight at 7:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

🔼 Cancer Picked the Wrong Hombre. It was Tuesday around noon. Practice was still an hour away. Sam Cunningham was on the main court at Neville Arena, throwing pass after pass to Lior Berman and helping the Auburn senior get shots up before the rest of the team arrived.

There was a time when Cunningham’s dream would have been to be on the receiving end of those passes, putting shots up as a member of the Auburn basketball team. But by simply being out there and helping Berman as one of the team managers, he was fulfilling a dream many thought might never happen.

Seven years ago, Cunningham was diagnosed with Pre-B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia while in the sixth grade. He was your average kid who loved playing baseball and basketball.

“I was a really healthy kid growing up,” he said. “I played sports and was active all the time. To get that news was a real big shock to me.”

Two weeks after the initial diagnosis, Cunningham came down with a fever and ended up in the hospital for the next 83 days. While there, he received a video from Bruce Pearl. The Auburn head coach let Cunningham know he was thinking about him and praying for him, and there was one line specifically that Cunningham kept with him throughout his cancer journey.

“Cancer picked the wrong hombre,” Pearl told Cunningham on the video. “It picked the wrong dude to mess with. You are going to beat this!”

🔼 News From the Plains Platform. Head coach Ryan Wochomurka sits down with Andy Burcham to discuss the upcoming SEC Championships, Feb. 19-24.

Auburn hosts SECs inside James E. Martin Aquatic Center for the first time since 2020 and the eighth time overall.

🔼 Spring Forward. Auburn soccer and head coach Karen Hoppa announced the team's slate of spring exhibition matches on Tuesday.

"The schedule is a good balance of home and away and will really test our team in ways that are going to prepare us to hit the ground running in the fall," Hoppa said.

The schedule consists of five contests — two at home and three on the road. The Tigers are set to face a challenging crop of opponents that includes two in-state rivals, the reigning SEC Tournament Champions, Georgia, and a Clemson side that concluded the 2023 season with a Final Fourth berth at the NCAA Tournament.
