Bodda Getta Daily Brew 7/23: Thorne's Razor-Sharp Outlook

Payton Thorne shares his confidence for the upcoming football season at SEC Media Days

22

Good Morning, Auburn Family. Bolstered by an influx of talented receivers and the advantage of a full offseason, a confident Payton Thorne represented Auburn at SEC Media Days.

“A huge difference,” Thorne said about getting here in the middle of summer last year. “Now we have a set plan. There's going to be more confidence that comes with that.”

Thorne also praised “new weapons” KeAndre Lambert-Smith and five-star freshman Cam Coleman.

While Thorne is working with those two for the first time, his connection with transfer receiver Sam Jackson V dates back to their days as high school teammates in Illinois.

“I’m extremely excited that he’s here, and I’m going to have a chance to throw him the ball this year.”

Go here to read more on Thorne’s offseason preparation, the “incredible fans” and his college season finale.

🔼 A Tale of Tiger Friendship. Senior transfer Sam Jackson V was only four years old when his parents put him in youth football on the west side of Chicago. The Jokers might’ve been his first jersey, but his success on the gridiron was certainly no laughing matter.

A journey that’s taken Jackson all around the country, featuring position changes and numerous triumphs over adversity, landed the receiver on The Plains alongside one of his best and oldest friends, quarterback Payton Thorne

“As soon as I met Payton, we just clicked instantly,” Jackson said. “It was almost like he was like a brother to me. His family took me in after every single game, and our sophomore year, I stayed at his house every Friday night.”

Read On the Plains With Sam Jackson V for more on how Payton usurped his role as QB (which ended up being a good thing!), the tight-knit Auburn team and his love of making his own clothes!

🔼 Courting Talent. Auburn has signed international players Merna Refaat and Emma Tothová, women’s tennis head coach Jordan Szabo has announced. Both players will join the Tigers in August for the 2024-25 season.

Refaat is a native of Giza, Egypt, and has won two J5 junior tournaments held in Cairo. In May, she and rising Auburn junior Angella Okutoyi claimed the doubles title at the ITF 15K in Monastir, Tunisia.

Tothová, an 18-year-old freshman from Bratislava, Slovakia, won two junior ITF doubles titles in 2021 at the J5 Stobrec and the J5 Dakar. Tothová holds a career-high ITF junior ranking of 392nd, and her career-high WTA singles ranking is No. 716.

🔼 No Gray Area. Auburn’s All-American, Honesty Scott-Grayson, is heading to Athens, Greece, to start her professional career with Amyntas B.C. Congrats, Honesty!
