Bodda Getta Daily Brew 1/8: The Quiet Place

You could've heard a pin drop in the normally raucous Bud Walton Arena as Tigers dominated Arkansas on the road.

Good morning. Known as one of the more hostile environments in the SEC, Bud Walton Arena was quiet for most of the day Saturday as No. 25 Auburn throttled Arkansas 83-51 on the road to secure a win in the SEC opener.

Auburn's 32-point win was the largest for a visitor in Bud Walton Arena history.

"I didn't know that, but now you made (the win) way better," Auburn's Chad Baker-Mazara said after the game.

"That history does matter," Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl said. "Doing it at a place like this or if you could do it at Rupp [Kentucky] or if you could do it at Tennessee, it does mean more because those are some of the toughest places in the SEC to play."

🔼 Wild and Free in the SEC. The Tigers outrebounded Arkansas 46-32 in the game on Saturday, managing 48 points in the paint compared to 18 for Arkansas. Defensively, they held the Razorbacks to 31 percent shooting and just 11 2-point field goals.

“They made some shots early. And it could have gotten away from us right there,” said head coach Bruce Pearl. “But the second group of Tre Donaldson, K.D. Johnson, Chad Baker-Mazara, Dylan [Cardwell] – they really settled us down.”

Playing in his first SEC game, Baker-Mazara scored seven straight points early. Later in the first half, he was part of a 7-0 Auburn run with a left-handed lay-up through traffic and a 3-pointer in transition. He scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the first half.

"My whole life, I've been dreaming about playing this game," said Baker-Mazara.

It was Johni Broome’s 12th game in double figures this season, also pulling down a team-high eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.

Tre Donaldson and Jaylin Williams also scored in double figures with 11 points each. Donaldson capped that 7-0 run right before the half with a reverse layup and finished with the best plus-minus (+31) of anybody on the team. He set a new career-high with seven rebounds and led the team with four assists.

With the win, Auburn now has six wins at Arkansas all-time, with three of those six wins coming under Pearl. More importantly, the Tigers are 1-0 to start SEC play.

Auburn (12-2, 1-0) will return home tomorrow for back-to-back SEC games against Texas A&M and LSU in Neville Arena, with the Aggies up first.

🔼 Honesty Not Quite Enough. Despite a game-high 15 points by Honesty Scott-Grayson, Texas A&M's size and depth proved to be too much for the Tigers in a 66-44 loss to the Aggies Sunday afternoon at Reed Arena.

The Tigers were unable to overcome several cold stretches as the Aggies controlled the paint and the glass to pull ahead early.

"I thought we got open shots, but we passed them up," Auburn head coach Johnnie Harris said. "They hedge hard on the on-ball screens, and we were coming off and getting to the paint, but then we would pass it out. We just did not execute our game plan.”

Auburn stays on the road for its next game, traveling to Oxford, Miss., to take on the Ole Miss Rebels on Thursday, Jan. 11. Game time is 6:30 p.m. at the SJB Pavilion.

🔼 These Scores Were Totally Fetch. The No. 17 Auburn gymnastics team put together a solid score to start the 2024 season, earning a 196.600 to come in third at the 2024 Mean Girls Super 16 Gymnastics Championship Saturday night in Las Vegas.

The Tigers topped No. 5 UCLA (196.550) in Orleans Arena, while No. 8 Alabama won the meet with a 197.125.

"I'm really happy with the fight that this team showed,” said head coach Jeff Graba. “We have a lot of new people in new positions, but I really felt like they stayed focused throughout all four events. I think that is going to bode well for the future."

"I thought it was a solid start to the season," graduate student Cassie Stevens said. "I thought we definitely had those first-meet jitters, but that's what this meet is for. We're taking what we learn from this and building off of it as we head into the next meets."

The 196.600 is the second-highest season opener for Auburn in program history. The Tigers set a program best at this meet last year.

Auburn hosts No. 9 Kentucky in Neville Arena on Jan. 12. The Tigers and the Wildcats will go head-to-head at 7:30 p.m. CT, and the meet will be televised on SEC Network.
