Bodda Getta Daily Brew 2/5: The Ole Switcheroo

Down at the half, No. 16 Auburn scored 56 points for a commanding 91-77 win over Ole Miss

Good morning. Down nine at the half, No. 16 Auburn scored 56 points in the second half to race past Ole Miss and sweep the season series with a 91-77 win Saturday night.

"That's the best win of the year for us," Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl said.

Johni Broome, who was held scoreless in the first half, scored all 15 of his points in the second half and spearheaded a 10-2 run to help the Tigers pull away down the stretch.

“Even though he [Broome] didn't put up any dominating numbers and got into a little bit of foul trouble, his demeanor, his play, his body language, the way he was in the huddle – there was no panic,” said Pearl. “I think the rest of the guys kind of fed off that.”

With the win, Auburn has now won six straight over Ole Miss in the series. Next up for the Tigers (18-4, 7-2) is a rematch against first-place Alabama in Neville Arena on Wednesday night. The game will tip off at 6 p.m. CT.

🔼 Serving Up the Sweep. No. 14 Women's tennis came away with two home wins over Texas Tech and South Alabama during a doubleheader on Sunday. The Tigers claimed the first match against Texas Tech 4-2 and shut out South Alabama in the second match 4-0.

The two wins improved Auburn's record to 4-1 for the season and a perfect 2-0 in home matches. Next, the Tigers will travel to Seattle for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, which will be played Feb. 9 through Feb. 12.

🔼 Under the Weather. Auburn men's golfers Ryan Eshleman and Josiah Gilbert earned a pair of top-10 finishes Sunday in their spring opener at the Thomas Sharkey Individual Intercollegiate in Statesboro, Georgia. Eshleman placed seventh at 3-under-par, and Gilbert finished one shot back in eighth at 2-under-par.

"Today was a really tough day to play," Tigers assistant coach Buddy Alexander said. "It was cold, windy, and never really got comfortable out there. As a group, we didn't play up to our standards, but we really hung in there and competed as hard as we could. We've got some things to work on, but overall, it was a great learning experience for these four."

The top-ranked Auburn golf team kickstarts team competition on Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawai'i.

🔼 Charity Stripe Challenges. Honesty Scott-Grayson had her third straight game with at least 20 points, but a furious fourth-quarter rally came up just short in a 74-72 loss to Arkansas on Sunday at Bud Walton Arena.

"I thought we played tough," Auburn head coach Johnnie Harris said. "We knocked down shots in the first half, we were right at 50 percent. I thought everything else was good except guarding (Taliah Scott). If we make our free throws… We were 13-of-27, we lost by two, and we left 11 points on the board."

After a Thursday night off, the Tigers are back on the road next Sunday, Feb. 11, for a showdown with the Missouri Tigers in Columbia, Missouri. Game time is 1 p.m. CT at Mizzou Arena.

🔼 Quadruple Kudos in Store. Olivia Greaves debuted in style, Gabby McLaughlin claimed two event titles, Cassie Stevens won the all-around and the No. 15 Auburn gymnastics team scored a season-high 197.425 to sweep a historic quad meet Friday at Neville Arena.

"Really happy with the team," Auburn coach Jeff Graba said. "Can't say enough about how good it was to see them respond the right way."

After missing the last two seasons recovering from two knee surgeries, Greaves missed the first month of this season after foot surgery in December.

"My coaches and my teammates lifted me up and made me realize I'm still worthy, and I can still do this, and it's not over yet," said Greaves, a redshirt freshman and former U.S. national team member who anchored on bars, earning a 9.875 to finish tied for second in the event in her first collegiate meet.

Auburn swept the event titles, with Stevens claiming the vault crown with a 9.925, Sophia Groth earning a 9.9 to take home the bars title, and McLaughlin winning beam with a 9.925 and a career-high 9.95 on floor.

Auburn welcomed college gymnastics' two HBCUs, Fisk and Talladega, along with Temple, in the first regular season quad meet on the Plains.

"They were all very thankful to be there," Graba said. "For us to add schools, we need to support that."

Auburn hosts rival Alabama next Friday at 8 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

🔼 In the Zone. The Auburn University Board of Trustees has given the first level of approval for the addition of a new state-of-the-art videoboard in the north end zone of Jordan-Hare Stadium, with the project breaking ground in the summer of 2024 to be completed in time for the 2025 Auburn football season.

The videoboard and supporting structure have been intentionally designed to stand alone behind the current seating bowl, enabling future north end zone improvement opportunities to utilize the concrete frame as part of any future projects.

The videoboard's concrete base structure is also expected to provide an expanded north end zone concourse to provide additional food and beverage offerings, while easing the flow of fans around the main concourse level of Jordan-Hare Stadium.

"This videoboard project will not only take a big step in our efforts to provide a better aesthetic balance between Jordan-Hare Stadium's north and south end zones and an improved sound experience but, more importantly, will continue to modernize the fan experience for our fan base,” Auburn Director of Athletics John Cohen said.

🔼 One Bit Short. The No. 4 Auburn equestrian team fell short on the road, falling to No. 5 South Carolina at One Wood Farm Saturday afternoon, 11-9.

"Congrats to South Carolina on a solid meet," head coach Jessica Braswell said. "They handled their horses better than we did today. There were some big rides we'll continue to build on, but we've got to improve our overall consistency as we prepare to go to Georgia next weekend."

Auburn (5-3, 1-2 SEC) came away with two Most Outstanding Performer honors on the day. Senior Ellie Ferrigno picked up her third MOP in Fences on the year, while sophomore Alexia Tordoff earned her third MOP in Horsemanship this season.

Auburn returns to competition next Saturday, traveling to rival and nationally-ranked Georgia on February 10. The Tigers and the Bulldogs will face off at 1 p.m. CT in Bishop, Georgia.
