Bodda Getta Daily Brew 3/5: The Maestro Takes a Bow

Honesty Scott-Grayson, aka The Maestro, closes the chapter on college hoops at Auburn

Good morning. Honesty Scott-Grayson traces her passion for basketball to her New Jersey childhood shooting hoops with her brother and cousins.

“I always had a ball in my hand, ever since I was a toddler,” she said. “Coming from a basketball family, that’s all we’d do is play.”

Scott-Grayson’s dedication made her a McDonald’s All-American as a high school senior in 2018, one of the nation’s top recruits.

After a freshman season at Baylor, Scott-Grayson transferred to Auburn and has been here ever since, staying through the coaching change three years ago that brought Johnnie Harris to the Plains.

“The loyalty factor,” said Scott-Grayson, whose 1,577 career points rank No. 12 in program history. “Coming to Auburn, I knew I was going to be here for the rest of my collegiate career.”

Read the feature for more on her hope to see her team’s name in the bracket on Selection Sunday, her WNBA aspirations and Auburn as her second home.

🔼 High Stakes Home Stretch. No. 13 Auburn enters the final week of the regular season, still in contention for an SEC championship.

"There's so much to play for coming down the stretch," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. "From a standpoint of seeding, both in the SEC Tournament as well as the NCAA Tournament, and the ability to advance in tournament play in March."

There's a complex scenario that ends with five teams sharing the SEC title. To do its part, Auburn needs to win both of its games this week, beginning in Tuesday's Late Show at Missouri, a winless but competitive team in SEC play.

"Missouri has played everybody tough," Pearl said.

Auburn (22-7, 11-5) and Missouri (8-21, 0-16) tip off this evening at 8 p.m. CT at Mizzou Arena in Columbia on SEC Network. Andy Burcham and Randall Dickey will bring the action to fans on the Auburn Sports Network.

"It's Senior Night at Missouri," Pearl said. "I can't imagine the intensity and passion those guys are going to play with to try to get the victory. But it means a lot to us, too. A loss to a team whose math is so compromised would set us back."

🔼 D is for Defense…and DJ Durkin. In the latest “Meet the Coaches” segment 👉🏼 Auburn defensive coordinator DJ Durkin. If you ask Durkin what the Tigers’ defense will look like this fall, he might advise you to check back with him after spring practice.

In his fourth SEC program in this position, Durkin builds his defenses around his players’ strengths.

“We’re identifying what guys do well,” he said. “As a coach, the No. 1 thing you have to do is put your players in position to have success. It’s identifying, these are the things we’re good at, and gearing more of the scheme toward that.

“Play with an edge, play fast. The biggest thing for me is when you have a defense that plays with great effort and tackles well; those two things usually spell out good results.”

This will be Durkin’s 10th season in the Southeastern Conference.

“It’s pretty well-documented around the country that football in this conference is as good as it gets. The competitiveness week in and week out to sustain through this conference schedule is what makes it different.”

Read the feature to hear about his own college football experience, why he’s an Auburn enthusiast and what led him to coaching.

Auburn continues competition on the road, traveling to Baton Rouge for a neutral quad meet. The Tigers are set to compete in the Podium Challenge in the Raising Cane's River Center on Friday at 6 p.m. CT. Auburn will take on LSU, George Washington and Texas Woman's University.

🔼 Pitch (Near) Perfect. Coming off a near-perfect week in the circle, Auburn softball ace Maddie Penta earned her first Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week honor of the season.

The selection was the sixth selection of Penta's career, as she has now won the award more times than any other pitcher in program history.

The right-hander has now recorded four consecutive shutouts and at least 10 strikeouts in five straight contests.

Eyeing history, Penta is just two wins shy of tying and three from breaking Kaylee Carlson for the program's record for career wins.
