Bodda Getta Daily Brew 2/12: The Last Line of D-Fense

Auburn's own Derrick Brown broke the NFL record, finishing the season with 103 tackles

Good morning. After tying the Carolina Panthers’ record for most tackles by a defensive lineman last season with 67, Derrick Brown entered the 2023 season with the goal of breaking it.

As he’s done consistently since arriving at Auburn in 2016, Brown exceeded even his own high expectations. He not only smashed the franchise record, Brown broke the NFL record, finishing his fourth professional season with 103 tackles.

A 10-tackle performance vs. the Bears in Carolina’s ninth game gave him 49 for the season, well ahead of the pace needed to set the Panthers’ record with eight games remaining.

Brown blew past the Panthers’ franchise record with another double-digit outing against the Saints on Dec. 10 and set his sights on Christian Wilkins’ NFL record of 98, set in 2022 with the Miami Dolphins.

“I’m way over the mark now,” Brown recalled thinking at the time. “Now I have a chance to hit a hundred.”

🔼 A Perfect 10. Earning a 10 on beam from one judge, Cassie Stevens won the all-around to lead No. 14 Auburn to a decisive 197.725-197.050 rivalry win over No. 7 Alabama on Friday at sold-out Neville Arena.

When the judge's assistant held up the 10.0, teammates mobbed Stevens, who scored a career-high 9.975 in a flawless routine.

"It was crazy. I wasn't really expecting it," Stevens said. "To be able to put together a solid performance for my team is really rewarding."

"We challenged them to embrace the environment because we were pretty sure the Auburn crowd was going to show up,” Auburn coach Jeff Graba said. “Sometimes that can increase the pressure, but they handled it extremely well and this is probably our cleanest meet of the year. It shows what we're capable of. It's not a fluke when we win now (vs. Alabama)."

Auburn will look to build on its season-best score next Friday at No. 3 LSU at 8 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

🔼 It’s a Miss For Mizzou. Honesty Scott-Grayson topped the 20-point mark for the fourth straight SEC game, and Auburn never trailed in a 70-59 victory at Missouri for their first SEC road win of the year.

Auburn (15-8, 4-6 SEC) jumped out to a big lead and withstood a third-quarter run by Mizzou, pulling away early in the fourth to pick up their fourth win in league play.

"We came out and played the way we wanted to play," Auburn head coach Johnnie Harris said. "We started out making it tough for (Missouri) to get all those 3s off. They ended up getting some of those off in the third quarter; a lot of that was in transition.”

Auburn is back at home Thursday, Feb. 15, to host the Kentucky Wildcats. Game time is 6 p.m. CT; it's the annual Play4Kay Pink Game, and fans are encouraged to wear pink.

🔼 Upsetting the Orange Cart. No. 14 Auburn wrapped up its time at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle with a win on Sunday, upsetting No. 8 Florida by a 4-0 final score. The win marks just the third time the Tigers have defeated the Gators in program history and the third time in the last four meetings. The win is also Auburn's fourth win over a top-10 opponent in the last three seasons.

"The team played hard and competed really well today," Auburn interim head coach Lester Cook said after the match. "The doubles point was huge and really helped us get momentum in singles. The match could have gone either way, but we played the big points well and had great energy."

The win improves Auburn's record to 5-3 while Florida's record drops to 4-4. Up next, the Tigers will travel to play 10th -ranked Texas on Feb. 18. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. CT and will be televised on the Longhorn Network.

🔼 Weather or Not to Play. Following an over two-hour rain delay, No. 20 Auburn softball's contest versus No. 23 Virginia Tech was officially called after six innings, resulting in a 5-5 tie Saturday evening at Jane B. Moore Field.

The team then completed three innings of its Tiger Invite finale versus Belmont (1-2) on Sunday, but inclement weather forced the game to be canceled before it could be considered an official contest.

Auburn returns to action on Thursday at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with a doubleheader versus UC Davis and No. 13 Utah. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m. CT. Games are available to stream with a FloSoftball subscription.

🔼 All Hail. Head coach Hugh Freeze has named Vontrell King-Williams as the defensive tackles coach at Auburn. King-Williams served as a defensive line analyst for Auburn this past season and previously worked on Freeze's staff at Liberty.

The completion of Auburn's defensive staff also includes various position assignments. Defensive coordinator DJ Durkin will oversee linebackers, co-defensive coordinator Charles Kelly will coach safeties, while Wesley McGriff will direct the cornerbacks and Josh Aldridge will move to coaching the defensive edge unit.

"I believe in what we are building here at Auburn and can't wait to continue to positively impact the lives of our student-athletes,” King-Williams said.

Freeze has high praise for King-Williams, saying, "Vontrell is an incredibly hard worker, passionate about his craft, and earned the respect of his players during his time with me at Auburn and Liberty."

🔼 No Albatross on Their Backs. The top-ranked Auburn men's golf team finished its weekend at the Amer Ari Invitational with a third-place finish following a 15-under round in Saturday's finale at Mauna Lani Golf Club.

For the second time this season, the Tigers set a new school record for team tournament score. Auburn's cumulative total of 58-under 806 tops the previous best of 56-under set last fall at the Mirabel Maui Jim Intercollegiate.

"I'm very proud of our level of play this week," head coach Nick Clinard said. "It's the best performance we've had in a spring opener in quite some time, which is a great sign of what's to come for this team.."

Auburn looks to continue its hot streak at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, which is set for Feb. 25-27 at Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.

🔼 Tidings From the Pool. Another day of action inside the James E. Martin Aquatic Center saw Ryan Wochomurka's Tigers put up another round of personal bests as Auburn barrels towards the SEC Championships in a little over a week.

Read the article for all the details, including Andrew Simmons’ season-best in the 200 back, Jon Vanzandt’s electric swim on Friday and Ellie Waldrep clocking a 1:55.77 to snag the win in the 200 back.

Wochomurka and Co. now await the 2024 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted on the Plains for the first time since 2020. The meet is slated for the Feb. 19-24 inside James E. Martin Aquatic Center.

🔼 Off the Chaney. "Chaney is one of our best athletes," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. Chaney Johnson nearly recorded his first double-double, but No. 12 Auburn fell behind early and trailed throughout, falling to Florida 81-65 Saturday at Exatech Arena, ending the Tigers' three-game winning streak.

"Florida played great. They were ready to go," Pearl continued. "There were a lot of things we talked about doing that we just did not get done."

Auburn (19-5, 8-3) returns to Neville Arena Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. CT to host first-place South Carolina on SEC Network.

"We've got an opportunity," Pearl said. "If we think Florida was physical, South Carolina is even more physical."

🔼 Momentarily Off the High Horse. The No. 5 Auburn equestrian team dropped a road contest Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 6 Georgia, 11-7, in Bishop, Georgia at the UGA Equestrian Complex.

"I'm really proud of the effort today," head coach Jessica Braswell said. "The result wasn't what we wanted, but I saw improvement in some areas from last week. We will get back to work and are looking forward to finally being back at home."

Auburn returns to the Auburn University Equestrian Center for a tri-meet with Dartmouth and UT Martin. The Tigers and Dartmouth will face off at 3 p.m. CT on Feb. 16 and will go against UT Martin on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. CT.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: The Hall of Fame Club provides access to a 3,000-square-foot climate-controlled club space featuring food, drinks, televisions, restrooms, and indoor seating.

A tribute to Auburn, Southeastern Conference and Major League Baseball great Frank Thomas, who is the first player from the SEC enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Hall of Fame Club will also add premium seats and standing-room space at field level to go along with that next-level club space.

 🐅 Have a great Monday, y’all
