Bodda Getta Daily Brew 1/2: The Great Eight Straight

Auburn Women's Basketball gets their eighth consecutive win on Sunday over North Alabama

Good morning. Auburn women’s hoops is comin’ into 2024 hot. JaMya Mingo-Young had her first Auburn double-double, McKenna Eddings led five Tigers in double figures and the Tigers won their eighth in a row as they defeated North Alabama 79-58 Sunday afternoon at Neville Arena.

A slow start gave way to a big second half for the Tigers' offense as a three-point halftime lead swelled to 20 late in the third quarter, and Auburn (11-2) never looked back as they closed out an unbeaten December.

"It was a good win, but I wasn't particularly happy with our start," Auburn head coach Johnnie Harris said.

"We created off of our defense, but we put McKenna in at the 4, they were sagging off and not guarding, and she hit some shots. Then we were able to get Honesty going, not just scoring but also creating."

🔼 You Get Double Figures. And You Get Double Figures! In Sunday’s victory over North Alabama—Auburn WBB’s eighth straight win—JaMya Mingo-Young once again flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. It was the eighth double-double of her career and first in an Auburn uniform. She also extended her consecutive free throws made streak to 25.

"I knew I was going to have to play extended minutes, so it was about being smart, hitting spots, executing plays," Mingo-Young said. "But we have to start getting out to better starts."

Three others hit for double-figures as Sydney Shaw, Honesty Scott-Grayson and Kaitlyn Duhon scored 11 points apiece. Celia Sumbane pulled down a season-best nine rebounds, and Shaw had a pair of blocked shots.

The Tigers also turned 21 UNA turnovers into 19 points while committing just 11 turnovers of their own. Auburn's bench scored 34 points, their third-best total of the season.

Auburn begins Southeastern Conference play on Thursday, Jan. 4, as the Tennessee Lady Volunteers visit Neville Arena. Game time is 7 p.m. CT.

🔼 Hardwood Mockery. Three players scored in double figures as the Auburn (10-2) Tigers closed out the calendar year with a 101-66 rout of the Chattanooga Mocs (8-5) on Saturday night at Neville Arena.

Giving WBB a run for their money, MBB’s Saturday victory was the team’s fifth-straight win and 52nd-consecutive victory over a non-conference opponent at home. It was also the second time this season Auburn hit the century mark.

"We respected our opponent in Chattanooga,” head coach Bruce Pearl said. “That's a good offensive team, and I thought we did a really good job guarding them."

Defensively, the Tigers held the Mocs to just 36.1 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded them on the glass 46-23. Chattanooga came into the ballgame as one of the top teams in the country in 3-point shooting and defensive rebounding.

Jaylin Williams continued his hot streak, pouring in a game-high 21 points on a perfect night from the floor (9-for-9), behind the 3-point arc (2-for-2) and free throw line (1-for-1).

Johni Broome joined Williams in the double-figure column with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Chad Baker-Mazara came off the bench and added 13.

The Tigers will ring in the New Year with Penn (8-6) tonight at 8 p.m. at Neville Arena in their final non-conference test before Southeastern Conference play.

🔼 Pearl’s History-Making Path. When the Tigers tipped off the 2023-24 season vs. Baylor on Nov. 7, Auburn officially became the longest stop in Bruce Pearl’s illustrious coaching career.

“You can say God’s got a plan, or you can actually believe it,” said Pearl, whose previous longest stint was his first as a head coach, nine seasons at Southern Indiana from 1992-2001. “I go to work every day trying to reward Auburn for giving me and my family the opportunity of a lifetime.”

Pearl has rewarded Auburn with three Southeastern Conference championships in the past six seasons, the program’s first No. 1 ranking and the only NCAA Tournament Final Four appearance of any team from the state of Alabama.

“It’s easier to get it going than it is to keep it going,” he said. “My goal is to compete for championships every year.”

Mindful of Auburn’s basketball history, Pearl aspires to pass Joel Eaves to become the Tigers’ all-time winningest coach.

“It’s going to take a few more years of success to do that, but I would like that if we can,” said Pearl, whose 10 wins so far this season give him 183 Auburn victories, just 30 shy of Eaves’ 213.

🐅 ONE BIG THING

Follow Tiger Trail To 2024. Though the TransPerfect Music City Bowl didn’t go the way the Auburn Tigers had hoped, with a 31-13 loss to the Maryland Terrapins, there were some definite bright spots. True freshman quarterback Hank Brown provided a spark in his hometown, and Rivaldo Fairweather set Auburn's season record for tight end receptions.

All eyes are on next season, especially after head coach Hugh Freeze’s success on National Signing Day.

"It takes great recruiting, and it also takes player-led teams that put the team first and the standard of the team every single day,” Freeze said after the game.
We're still learning that, and we've got to demand it as coaches, and we can't waver from it when we get back in January. I'm looking forward to the leadership of our team doing that."
