Bodda Getta Daily Brew 9/3: The Freeze Four Have Arrived
Four Auburn football players showed in the season opener that receivers are the changemakers
Good Morning, Auburn Family. Arriving at Auburn with perhaps more fanfare than any freshman receivers in program history, the Tigers’ in-state quartet not only met the exuberant expectations in their debut.
The Freeze Four far exceeded them.
Combining for nine catches, 268 receiving yards and four touchdowns – including one on special teams – Cam Coleman, Perry Thompson, Malcolm Simmons and Bryce Cain served notice that receivers are now a position of strength on the Plains.
The Freeze Four combined to haul in more than half of Auburn’s 451 passing yards, the most in a season opener in program history.

⚽️ Maddie Prohaska voted SEC Defensive Player of the Week
🐅 And much, much more!
Talking Tigers - Don Dunn
He coached all over college football, but Don Dunn’s longest stint came on the Plains. He and his family made Auburn their home. During his 10 years as defensive line coach at Auburn, the Tigers won the SEC Championship and went unbeaten in 2004. Dunn has retired from coaching and now spends his time as a pitmaster making barbecue in Auburn. Don Dunn is featured in this Talking Tigers Podcast.
🔼 Thorne 2.0. Six years after they teamed up for 14 touchdowns in high school football in Illinois, Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne and receiver Sam Jackson V are reunited on the Plains.
If you’re looking for insight into Auburn’s QB, ask his roommate.
“Best roommate I’ve ever had,” said Jackson, who stayed at the Thornes’ home after games on Fridays in the fall of 2018, when Payton was a senior and Sam was a sophomore.
Thorne lived alone last season after arriving at Auburn in the summer following his transfer from Michigan State. Jackson joined the program this season after transferring from the University of California.
In his first season at Auburn, Thorne threw for 16 touchdowns and 1,755 yards while adding a career-high 519 yards rushing.
Still, says Jackson, that “wasn’t Payton.”
Three years ago, as a sophomore at Michigan State, Thorne tossed 27 touchdown passes and threw for 3,233 yards.
“You go back to 2021,” Jackson said. “That’s how Payton is playing now.”
Why the change? Several factors, including an upgraded arsenal of receivers, a retooled offense that matches Thorne’s strengths and experience and a second season with many of his Auburn teammates.

🔼 Soccer Gone Mad(die). For the second time in three weeks, Auburn’s Maddie Prohaska has been voted the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
The goalkeeper added two more clean sheets to her resume over the weekend in Auburn’s 6-0 win at South Alabama and 3-0 against App State. Prohaska made three saves, upping her career total to 266.
Prohaska also picked up an assist in the App State victory, serving a free kick from midfield into the box for sophomore Dylan Driver to put away.
The weekly honor is the fifth of Prohaska’s career. She and the Tigers return to competition on Thursday, Sept. 5, as they travel to Birmingham for a match with Samford at 6 p.m. CT.
