🔼 A Done Deal. Tight end Luke Deal’s sixth preseason camp on the Plains will be unlike any other.
Luke and his wife, Ansley York Deal, are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first child, due in August.
“We’re having a boy, and we’ve already got his name picked out,” Deal said. “It’ll be Christopher James after my dad, and we’re going to call him C.J.”
Deal lost his beloved father, Chris, after a short battle with ALS in June 2022.
Read On the Plains With Luke Deal for more on his hopes for his final Auburn season, what it’s like to be the longest-tenured team member and how he hopes to come full circle and eventually land back at Auburn as a strength coach.
🔼 What a Relief…Pitcher. Athletes Unlimited Pro Softball’s AUX season concluded Tuesday night with Auburn softball alumna Maddie Penta turning in her strongest professional performance during Series 3. The 2023 SEC Pitcher of the Year offered a relief appearance, striking out one.
Penta concluded the AUX season 35th in the overall standings, totaling 804 points in her rookie campaign. She finished third in the league with 16 strikeouts. Posting a 2-1 record with one save, Penta gave up just 12 earned runs over 21.0 innings, posting a 3.94 earned run average. She allowed the fewest home runs of any pitcher in the league, issuing just one.
🔼 Pearsons Pass The Auburn Baton. The latest in the “Auburn Being Auburn” series is the multi-generational Auburn Alumni Pearson family, with Steve (‘72), Connie (‘71') and their son, Matt (‘99), being featured in the video.
As Connie said of raising their kids in an Auburn-loving family, “I think they learned to say ‘War Eagle’ before they learned to say ‘Mama’ and ‘Dada.’”
Of being part of the third generation that went to Auburn [his sister went there, too], Matt joked, “I didn’t have a choice…and I’m grateful for that.”
The next goal for the Pearsons? To get at least one of the grandchildren to go there to take the Auburn connection into a fourth generation.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER
Answer: The most popular legend about the origin of the War Eagle battle cry is from when Auburn played Georgia in football for the first time in 1892.
The story goes that a Civil War veteran brought an eagle to the game and let it go, where it circled the field as Auburn took the lead. Fans and students began chanting "War Eagle" to support the team and the eagle dove to the ground at the end of the game.
