Bodda Getta Daily Brew 12/21: The Call is Coming From Inside the House
NSD Update: Half of Auburn's 24-member Top 10 class is homegrown, including five-star receivers.
Good morning. Exceeding his goal of signing a top 10 class in his first full recruiting season, Auburn coach Hugh Freeze thanked the student-athletes who believed in his vision and the coaches and staff who helped make it happen.
"I'm excited about this class,” Freeze said on National Signing Day. “They want to help the program reestablish itself as one of the elite programs in the country…”
Half of Auburn's 24-member class is homegrown, including five-star receivers Cam Coleman from Phenix City and Perry Thompson from Foley, who both flipped to the Tigers after originally committing to SEC rivals.
"We needed to get some difference makers at the receiver position," said Freeze, who also signed in-state receivers Bryce Cain from Mobile and Malcolm Simmons from Alexander City. "It changes our offense if we have guys like that on the outside and the slot who can make plays, and I've seen them do it.”

🔼 That’s a No to the Status Quo. "That is the way you start building a program to create competitiveness among the roster that drives you to chase a standard every day that's needed to win in this conference,” Coach Freeze said of the team’s results on National Signing Day.
Linebackers Demarcus Riddick from Chilton County High School and Joe Phillips from BTW in Tuskegee added to Auburn's in-state star power.
"We want to win this state," Freeze said, noting that Riddick and Phillips will help kickstart that.
Quarterback signee Walker White from Little Rock, Arkansas, not only committed early, but he also consistently helped recruit his future teammates in person and online.
"Walker White, I think, is going to be a star," Freeze said. "He's got all the attributes of what a quarterback should look like. He's a true Auburn man."
"You can go to the elite right now and help them sustain," Freeze said to the prospects. Instead, however, he encouraged them to be trailblazers, and that message resonated with defensive lineman Amaris Williams, a top 50 national recruit from Clinton, North Carolina, whose signing day switch from Florida to Auburn propelled the Tigers' class inside the top 10.
🔼 A Story of Defense, Honesty and Intensity. Auburn's Honesty Scott-Grayson scored all 17 of her points in the second half to lead Auburn to a 69-62 comeback win over Washington State Wednesday afternoon at Neville Arena, the Tigers' seventh consecutive victory.
"Extreme intensity. I told them in shootaround that's what we were going to have to have to win this game," Auburn coach Johnnie Harris said.
JaMya Mingo-Young flirted with a triple-double, scoring 12 points and leading Auburn with seven assists and seven rebounds.
A halftime discussion between Harris and Scott-Grayson motivated Auburn's veteran star.
"She gave me a good talking to, telling me that I needed to look for my shots," Scott-Grayson "That's what got me going in the second half.”
Auburn’s D is what Coach Harris thinks won the game, as the Tigers forced 20 turnovers and outscored the Cougars 23-14 in points off turnovers.
"I started off in a defensive system, so that's in my blood. I believe in it wholeheartedly. That's what I built this team around.”
Auburn (10-2) will break for Christmas before ringing in the new year vs. North Alabama on Sunday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. CT.
🔼 Bolstering the Roster. Auburn soccer and head coach Karen Hoppa announced the addition of transfer forward Shelby Sallee to the program Tuesday.
Sallee spent the previous three seasons at Xavier University. She will join the Tigers' roster in the spring with two years of eligibility remaining.
"We are thrilled to add Shelby to our roster," Hoppa said. "She is a proven attacker who can score goals and create for others.”
Sallee made her collegiate debut in the fall of 2021 and was named to the Big East All-Freshman Team. An injury sidelined Sallee for the 2022 season, but she responded with seven goals and an assist in a breakout 2023 campaign.
In her two seasons on the pitch at Xavier, the Musketeers earned a pair of conference titles and posted a 30-7-5 head-to-head record, which included two NCAA Tournament berths.
Auburn soccer returns to action in the spring for a slate of exhibition matches. A schedule will be announced at a later date.
🔼 Dive Into Some Good News. Head diving coach John Fox and his Auburn diving crew concluded a terrific week with the men's platform event on Wednesday. Senior Hunter Kebler capped off his impressive showing with a win and a career-high while the rest of the Tigers put together solid scores inside James E. Martin Aquatic Center.
Winston-Salem, North Carolina native Whit Andrus was the cream of the crop in prelims, striking a solid 346.20 with Kebler right behind at 343.13.
It was the Moultrie, Georgia product in finals, though, who brought the house down. Kebler strung together his best six dives from the platform in his career, piling up a 396.68 to take the win.
Andrus would follow in third. Meanwhile, Freshmen Talan Blackmon (285.60) took fourth, and Alex Just (272.10) grabbed fifth.
Fox and Co. will be back in action Jan. 3-5 for the Tennessee Diving Invitational. The Tigers return to the Plains for a dual against rival Georgia for Senior Day on Jan. 6.
