Honesty Scott-Grayson earns SEC, national weekly awards

Good morning. Following a stellar performance in Auburn's upset victory over No. 7 LSU, Honesty Scott-Grayson earned recognition from both the Southeastern Conference and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, being named SEC Player of the Week; she shares the honor with Mississippi State's Jessika Carter.

She was also named one of five recipients of the USBWA Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Week honors, joining Caitlin Clark (Iowa), Sara Bejedi (Florida State), Ayoka Lee (Kansas State) and Anastasiia Boldyreva (Middle Tennessee).

Auburn continues SEC play this week with a road game at Vanderbilt tomorrow night (6:30 p.m. CT). Sunday’s showdown at home with rival Alabama at 2 p.m. will honor former Tiger great DeWanna Bonner by retiring her number 24 in a pregame ceremony.

🔼 Beam Us Up, Scotty. The Auburn gymnastics team is currently ranked tied for No. 12 in this week's RoadToNationals.com rankings.

The Tigers improved their average to 196.813 after scoring a season-best 197.025 last Friday vs. Kentucky in Neville Arena. Auburn remains on the Plains this week, hosting another top-10 opponent, No. 7 Florida. The two teams will face off at 5 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

"It's exciting to be ranked among the top 15 once again this week," head coach Jeff Graba said. "It's still really early in the season, but we seem to be improving each week."

Auburn's bars squad is tied for 12th nationally with a 49.263 average, while the vault and floor lineups are both tied for 15th. Auburn's vault has an average of 49.163, and floor stands at 49.338. The beam team is ranked 20th at 49.050.

🔼 All in Favour. Junior Favour Ashe of the Auburn track & field team was selected as the SEC Men's Co-Runner of the Week, sharing the award with Florida's Robert Gregory.

The Ughelli, Nigeria native finished first in the 60m at the Harvey Glance Tide & Tiger Dual Meet with a time of 6.53. In his indoor season debut, Ashe's time was just three-hundredths of a second from the Auburn school mark. His time ranks No. 1 nationally and No. 2 on the current world list.

Ashe won SEC Freshman of the Week twice and SEC Outdoor Freshman Runner of the Year in 2022 at the University of Tennessee.

Ashe and the Tigers will be back in action Friday, Jan. 19, at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee.

🔼 H-Squared. Riding a nine-game win streak as they go into tonight’s game against Vanderbilt, tied atop the SEC standings and climbing ever so closer to the top 10, No. 13 Auburn relies on head coach Bruce Pearl's time-tested strategy to remain humble and hungry

"I would anticipate all four of them [upcoming games] being much closer and us being involved in situations that we've hardly been involved in this year, so those are the kind of things we're preparing for," said Pearl, whose team has won by double digits in each game during its win streak. "Obviously, we have a lot to play for."

Pearl also called Vandy coach Jerry Stackhouse “one of the best offensive coaches in the country because he was a pro.”

Seeking its 10th straight win, Auburn (14-2, 3-0) plays Vanderbilt (5-11, 0-3) tonight at 8 p.m. CT at Nashville’s Memorial Gymnasium on SEC Network.

🤔 TIGER TRIVIA

Running Afoul. Junior Chad Baker-Mazara is being touted as one to watch in tonight’s game against Vanderbilt. He has scored in double figures in two of Auburn's three SEC games and four of the last five games overall. He poured in a game-high 19 points, along with a career-best five steals, in the team's win over LSU on Saturday.

His free throws have also been right on the money thus far this season, which brings us to today’s question.

Going into tonight’s game, what is Baker-Mazara’s free throw percentage?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 88.7% — In Auburn’s win over LSU, Chad Baker-Mazara went 6-for-6 at the free throw line!

Baker-Mazara has averaged 13.2 points in Auburn's last five contests and has led the Tigers in scoring twice in their three SEC games, registering 16 points at Arkansas in his conference debut on Jan. 6 and 19 points vs. LSU on Saturday. He’s one to watch, indeed.
