Bodda Getta Daily Brew 11/6: Sweet Harmony

Today's about Auburn fans making noise at FirstBank Stadium.

Good morning. In what looked and sounded like an Auburn home game, Jarquez Hunter sprinted for two long early touchdowns, and the Tiger defense forced six three-and-outs in a 31-15 victory over Vanderbilt Saturday at FirstBank Stadium.

"It did not feel like we were in a typical road game. Our fans were incredible," Auburn coach Hugh Freeze said of the Tigers devotees, who filled most of the stadium's east side and much of the west.

So Clutch. Head coach Brent Crouch and the No. 24 Auburn Tigers (18-5, 8-4) passed another stern test on Sunday, climbing back from a set deficit to win its fifth five-setter of the year over the Aggies, 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12).

Auburn hit .379 in the opening frame as Jackie Barrett distributed four kills to Akasha Anderson, three to Kendal Kemp and two apiece to Madison Scheer and Bella Bell.

Strong passing from Sarah Morton, Zoe Slaughter and Paige Thibault put the Tigers' best foot forward as the Orange and Blue owned a side-out percentage of well over 60 percent.

All season long, Crouch's team has seemed to make the big plays when it counted most. Another .300 effort in the final frame, combined with momentum-swinging blocks, and Auburn capped off another impressive road trip against a venerable Texas A&M.

“I'm just so proud of the team. They keep working really hard, and it's paying off,” Crouch said. “This team just doesn't like to lose."

Auburn returns to Neville Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 6:30 p.m. CT for a highly anticipated matchup with Kentucky.

🔼 On the Hunt. The Tigers were off to a fast start against the Commodores on Saturday, with Jarquez Hunter racing a season-long 67 yards on the Tigers' second play of the game, cruising through a sizable hole created by linemen Connor Lew and Kam Stutts for a 7-0 lead.

"That's as patient as I've seen him on inside zone," coach Freeze said of Hunter, who rushed for a career-best 183 yards. "I do think that's why he's having more explosive runs the last few weeks."

Auburn scored touchdowns on its first two possessions of the second half to pull away from the Commodores.

Also noteworthy was when Thorne found Rivaldo Fairweather for a 53-yard touchdown, Auburn's third touchdown of 50-plus yards, a feat the Tigers most recently accomplished in the 2018 Music City Bowl at nearby Nissan Stadium.

After the Tigers stopped Vanderbilt's penultimate possession by forcing an incompletion on fourth-and-goal, Nehemiah Pritchett ended the Commodores' last drive with an interception.

"Thrilled to win a second consecutive SEC game, particularly on the road, and get us one step closer to being bowl eligible," Freeze said.

Seeking its third consecutive SEC victory, Auburn (5-4, 2-4) plays at Arkansas next Saturday at 3 p.m. CT on SEC Network and the Auburn Sports Network.

🔼 All Everything. It’s another preseason nod for Auburn junior forward/center Johni Broome (Plant City, Fla.) as he earned a spot on the Southeastern Conference men's basketball coaches' preseason All-SEC First Team on Thursday.

Broome was one of 36 players who received votes from the coaches. He is the only returning player in the SEC, who averaged 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks last season.

The 2023-24 campaign begins Tuesday, Nov. 7, for the Tigers with a neutral-site, season-opening game versus preseason No. 20-ranked Baylor in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Conference play is set to begin Jan. 6. The 2024 SEC Tournament will be March 13-17 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

🔼 Vandy-Born, Auburn-Bred. Elijah McAllister hosted Donovan Kaufman on his official visit to Vanderbilt in 2019. Nearly four years later, Kaufman returned the favor, hosting McAllister when Elijah visited the Plains earlier this year.

“It’s a full-circle moment,” Kaufman said of Saturday’s SEC clash between Auburn and Vandy, resulting in a clear win for the Tigers. “I still get to see his pops and all his family before every game. It’s fun.”

“I’ve known him for a long time, and we’ve grown to become best friends,” McAllister said. “We’re really close, and I’m thankful to call him one of my best friends on the team.”

SEC network analyst Derek Mason—a former Vanderbilt head coach and Auburn defensive coordinator—recruited McAllister and Kaufman to Nashville before re-recruiting Kaufman to join the Tigers in 2021.

“Extremely intelligent guys who I felt embodied what playing football at a high level looked like,” Mason said. “Elijah is special in every way, on the field and off. To me, DK is like Tyrann Mathieu, a young man with a huge thirst for football.”

A junior safety, Kaufman played one season at Vanderbilt in 2020 before transferring to the Plains, where he’s been a three-year starter in the secondary.

McAllister, a senior jack linebacker, spent five seasons at Vandy before arriving at Auburn, where his teammates elected him team captain—an honor he twice received at Vanderbilt.

🔼  No Achilles Heel.. The daughter of former Auburn great Carolyn Jones-Young – a two-time SEC Player of the Year, All-American and Olympian - and former Auburn men’s assistant coach Charlton “C.Y.” Young, Audia Young remembers the day that her future playing Auburn hoops became uncertain: September 2, 2022.

“We were running offense dry,” she said. “I was coming off a screen, and I stepped, and it just kind of popped.”

She had torn her Achilles. It took a moment for it to sink in.

“I’ve twisted my ankle plenty of times playing basketball,” Young said. “It was a different feeling. I was kind of in shock. When I tried to get up and walk, I was surprised that I couldn’t even put pressure on it, and then it didn’t really hit me until I sat down.”

“I was just devastated,” she said. “I’ve had two ACLs previously, and I was still rehabbing for my knees.”

For a good portion of the rest of the fall, she had a scooter to get around campus. Then it was rehab time – lots of jump rope, heel raises, and rebuilding strength.

After a gradual increase in activity during the summer and heading into preseason workouts, Young was cleared to return to full practice in early September.
