Bodda Getta Daily Brew 3/22 - Standing on Business

Will MBB's opening NCAA Tournament game winning streak continue? We'll know today.

Good morning. When Bruce Pearl addressed the media Tuesday, he didn't mention Auburn's SEC Tournament title in his opening statement—on purpose. The Tigers have turned their focus to the NCAA Tournament. By the time they got back to the locker room in Nashville, they were already thinking about what was next.

Auburn and Yale will tip off today at 3:15 p.m. CT from Spokane Arena. This will mark the Tigers’ 13th NCAA Tournament appearance and fifth in the last six tournaments.

"I think the guys did a great job all year long of being unselfish and all being patient and all accepting less individually so that we as a team could achieve more,” Coach Bruce Pearl said.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Heartache Despite High Notes. Taylen Collins scored her 1,000th career point, and Yakiya Milton had a career night, but early turnovers proved to be the difference as Auburn's season came to an end with a 69-59 loss to Arizona in the NCAA First Four.

Honesty Scott-Grayson, playing her 140th and final college game, led Auburn with 13 points despite dealing with foul trouble throughout. She also shared the team lead with three steals and pulled down four rebounds.

Auburn's season ends at 20-12 with their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2019.

🔼 Stiff Softball Competition. Looking to secure its first Southeastern Conference series win of the season, No. 25 Auburn softball (15-6-1, 2-4 SEC) heads to Davis Diamond for a three-game series at No. 12 Texas A&M (23-5, 5-1 SEC). Auburn opens the series in College Station this evening at 6 p.m. CT.

🔼 Tennis Twofer. No. 21 Men's tennis will travel north to face 56th-ranked Vanderbilt today and 5th-ranked Kentucky on Sunday. Auburn moved into the ITA top 25 for the first time this season after upsetting both Florida and South Carolina at the Yarbrough Tennis Center over the weekend. Today’s match begins at 4 p.m. CT at the Ensworth Tennis Center, and they’ll face No. 5 Kentucky at noon CT on Sunday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center.

🔼 Rider Recognition. Three student-athletes on the No. 5 Auburn equestrian team earned SEC Rider of the Month recognition for March. Senior Kate Buchanan added SEC Reining Rider of the Month to her NCEA recognition announced Wednesday. Freshman Avery Glynn was recognized for Fences, while fifth-year Ava Stearns earned the honor for Flat. The Tigers will be the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 2 seed Georgia at the 2024 SEC Championship in Bryan-College Station, Texas, March 29-30.

🔼 Ye Ole Road Trip. The No. 18 Auburn women’s tennis team will make two stops in Mississippi over the weekend, playing 33rd-ranked Ole Miss on Friday in Oxford and Mississippi State on Sunday in Starkville.

Despite the team suffering two losses on Friday and Sunday, Auburn sophomore DJ Bennett kept the Tigers in both of their matches with two singles wins at the No. 3 position and a doubles point-clinching win against South Carolina. Bennett has now won seven consecutive singles matches and five straight doubles matches alongside partner Ariana Arseneault.

The team will still be without Angella Okutoyi, who just wrapped the 2024 African Games with gold and silver medals.

🔼 No “Lolleygagging” Here. In a career that spans nearly five decades, Phillip Lolley coached high school, college and professional football, winning championships at each level.

"I consider myself a high school coach first," Lolley said. "Always have."

Lolley, who served on Auburn football's coaching and support staff from 1999 to 2014, was inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame on Monday.

"People say it hasn't sunk in yet,” Lolley said. “It has sunk in to me. It's something that's very special to me."
