Bodda Getta Daily Brew 2/15: Splash Bros

Jaylin Williams + Johni Broome coined a nickname after a combined 44 pts in the win over South Carolina

Good morning. It was the Jaylin and Johni show in Neville Arena on Wednesday night. Auburn's frontcourt duo combined for 44 points to lead the 13th-ranked Tigers to a 101-61 win over No. 11 South Carolina in a battle between two of the SEC's top teams.

Following the game, Jaylin Williams and Johni Broome coined a new nickname for themselves after combining to shoot 9 of 12 from beyond the arc.

"Splash Bros," the two said in unison to open their postgame press conference.

With the win, Auburn (20-5, 9-3) is now tied with South Carolina (21-4, 9-3) for second place in the SEC with six league games remaining.

The Tigers will be back in Neville Arena on Saturday to host No. 22 Kentucky at 5 p.m. CT. Auburn will also welcome ESPN's College GameDay back to the Plains for the third straight season and the fourth time in the last five years.

"We talk about trying to make history, and this team is trying to make history," Pearl said. "There's no better opportunity than having Kentucky, national television, College GameDay. It will be a great weekend.โ€

๐Ÿ“น WAREAGLE+: FACE-TO-FACE

Face-to-Face with Quentin Riggins
President pro tempore and former All-SEC Linebacker Quentin Riggins sits down with Andy Burcham for a Face-to-Face interview. On the day of his first visit to an Auburn football game, Quentin Riggins had to leave early so he could flip burgers at McDonald's. It became the mark of commitment for Riggins, who became an All-American linebacker on three SEC Championship teams. He played in the 1989 Iron Bowl, the first ever at Jordan-Hare Stadium. He spent 25 seasons patrolling the sidelines on the Auburn Football broadcast. This summer, Riggins officially became the first African American President pro tempore of the Auburn University Board of Trustees.

๐Ÿ”ผ Mad About Penta. Fighting through rain and a Wichita State (2-2) seventh-inning rally to force extras, No. 25 Auburn softball (2-1-1) came through with timely hits to open the PV College Challenge with an 8-6 victory Wednesday at Nancy Almarez Stadium.

"Our offense did their job in that final inning," said head coach Mickey Dean. "Proud that they were able to fight back to finish the game out."

Maddie Penta (1-1) was virtually untouchable in her third start of the season. Through five innings, Penta allowed just one run off three hits. She struck out eight, including the 700th of her Tiger career, before she was lifted for the bullpen in the sixth.

Penta joined Auburn pitching greats Anna Thompson, Holly Currie and Kristen Keyes as the only Tigers in program history to reach 700 career strikeouts.

Auburn returns to the diamond today for a doubleheader slate on the second day of competition in Mexico. The Tigers face UC Davis at 12 p.m. CT before taking on No. 13 Utah at 2:30 p.m. CT. Both games are available to stream with a FloSoftball account.

๐Ÿ”ผ Pack it In for the Play4Kay Pink Game. For the first time in two weeks, the Auburn women's basketball team is back inside Neville Arena as they host the Kentucky Wildcats tonight for the annual Play4Kay Pink Game at 6 p.m. CT.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness and research. Auburn coach Johnnie Harris will be donating $3 to the Kay Yow Foundation for every student in attendance.

If 3,492 fans are in attendance for Thursday's game, Auburn will break the program's record for total attendance in a season (current record: 49,429 in 2008-09).

The Tigers (15-8, 4-6 SEC) secured their first SEC road win of the season Sunday when they defeated Missouri 70-59, and they beat Kentucky 71-68 in their last matchup a little over a year ago.

Tickets are available in advance by visiting AUBTix.com and on gameday at the arena ticket office.

Auburn hits the road again for its next two games, beginning with a trip across the state to face rival Alabama. Game time is 2 p.m. Sunday at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa.

๐Ÿ”ผ News Worthy of More Than a Golf Clap. After leading the Tigers in a record-breaking performance at the Amer Ari Invitational, Auburn men's golf freshman Jackson Koivun was named Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Week.

It is the fourth SEC weekly honor for Koivun, the most by any golfer in program history.

Auburn finished third at last weekend's Amer Ari Invitational, behind a school-record 58-under total. Koivun matched the individual record for the 54-hole score for the second time just five tournaments into his collegiate career, shooting 67-63-69 (-17) to place tied for fourth.

Next up, Koivun and the Tigers head to Las Vegas for the Southern Highlands Collegiate Feb. 25-27 at Southern Highlands Golf Club. Auburn is slated to make its first appearance at the event since 2019.
