📹 1985 SEC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT FINAL - AUBURN VS ALABAMA

Go back in history and relive one of Auburn basketball's biggest wins. The Sonny Smith-led squad defeated Alabama 53-49 in overtime to win the program’s first conference title.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Grinch Mode Activated. Auburn played relentless defense, set the program record with 28 steals and scored 28 straight points to run away early from Alabama State, defeating the Hornets 94-37 Wednesday at Neville Arena for the Tigers' fifth straight win.

"We wanted to establish dominance from the start, and that starts for us on the defensive end," Auburn coach Johnnie Harris said. "We were pressuring the ball, and we made them pass the ball where they didn't want to pass it. We didn't let them get into their offense."

"We've been working on that," Scott-Grayson said. "That's our bread and butter, getting steals."

Auburn forced 40 turnovers – tied for the second-most in program history – leading to 53 points. Collins and Kaitlyn Duhon each added four steals. Carsen McFadden made the first of her two steals midway through the fourth quarter to help Auburn break the previous program record of 25. Twelve of the 15 Tigers who played recorded a steal.

Honesty Scott-Grayson led the Tigers with a season-high 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting. Taylen Collins scored 17 points, also a season high. Celia Sumbane scored 11 points and led Auburn with seven rebounds and five steals, and McKenna Eddings added 10 points.

"You can see the chemistry is getting better," Harris said. "The chemistry on the floor comes with experience, playing together. They're starting to know each other, they're playing hard and they're trusting each other."

Auburn (8-2) plays the second segment of its five-game homestand Saturday at 2 p.m. CT vs. Norfolk State at Neville Arena.

🔼 To Infinity and Beyond. Playing away from home again, Auburn picked up right where it left off Saturday with another impressive performance Wednesday night to beat UNC Asheville 87-62 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

The offense carried the day against Indiana on Saturday. This time, it was the defense that took over midway through the first half and early in the second half, helping the Tigers pull away.

"We turned up the defense," Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl said. "When you play like that and you play that hard, it's the ultimate sign of being unselfish. I thought we got some offense from our defense. We came out of the start of the second half, executed better and really took control of the game."

Tre Donaldson scored a career-high 15 points. Chad Baker-Mazara knocked down three 3-pointers in a three-minute span during the second half and finished with 11 points. And K.D. Johnson and Dylan Cardwell provided a spark on both ends of the court.

For Auburn, it was the third straight game away from home and the sixth this season, but there were plenty of Auburn fans in the building to cheer on the Tigers.

"I appreciated all the support," Pearl said. "We've been trying to get to Huntsville for a few years now. We've got some of the best Auburn fans in Huntsville. We really do. It was great."

The Tigers (7-2) will be back home Sunday for a showdown against USC in Neville Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for noon, and the game will be televised on ESPN.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: The 2010 season: 14-0, (8-0), SEC Champions, National Champions

Some people think that the 2004 Auburn squad, which never had an opportunity to play for a national championship, was better than the 2010 Tigers. The biggest reason the 2010 Auburn Tigers won the national title, however, was that they had Cam Newton. Newton, the Heisman Trophy winner, played just one season on the Plains but proved himself to be the best player in college football.
