Bodda Getta Daily Brew 2/26: Skin in the Game

After dominant win over Georgia, men's hoops face Volunteers in game with championship implications

Baker-Mazara went into the starting lineup against the Bulldogs as Pearl looked to shake things up with Jaylin Williams out due to injury.

"Chad Baker-Mazara was the best player on the floor tonight," Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl said, calling it “a great win.”

With the win, Auburn (21-6, 10-4) reached double-digit SEC wins for the 23rd time in program history and the sixth time in the last seven seasons.

The Tigers and the Volunteers will meet Wednesday night in Knoxville for a game with championship implications. Both teams are within a game of the SEC lead.

🔼 Vigilante Stuff. Maddie Penta was dressed for revenge on Sunday as the Tiger ace tossed her fifth collegiate no-hitter to lead No. 24 Auburn softball (7-2-1) to a 1-0 victory over UNI (8-3) Sunday in the Plainsman Invitational finale at Jane B. Moore Field.

Penta stands only behind Holly Currie in Auburn softball history. Currie tossed seven no-hitters during her legendary career.

Picking up her third win of her senior campaign, Penta is now tied with Lexi Davis for second in Auburn softball history with 63 career wins and is nearing Kaylee Carlson's school record of 67. The shutout victory was also the 15th of her career.

"We only made one mistake today,” said head coach Mickey Dean. “When you do that, you always got a chance to win a ball game."

The Tigers return to the diamond on Wednesday for their first true road test of the 2024 season as Auburn heads to UAB for a midweek tilt. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT.

🔼 Neville Numbers Skyrocket. Auburn's familiar formula – turnovers and transition – carried the Tigers to a 57-41 victory over Texas A&M on Sunday at Neville Arena.

"Our team was really tough to hold them to 41 points and to outrebound (41-30) that team,” Auburn coach Johnnie Harris said.

Auburn's 16th win and fifth SEC victory surpassed last season's totals in both categories.

With 3,760 in attendance, Auburn broke the program's season record, now at 52,351, with one home game remaining.

“You're looking at people who love Auburn,” Harris said. “They love Auburn, and they love representing Auburn. The fans recognize that."

Auburn (17-10, 6-8) remains at Neville Arena, where the Tigers are 13-3 this season, hosting Mississippi State Thursday at 7 p.m. CT on Senior Night.

🔼 Tigers Made Waves at SEC Championships For the first time since 2016, both the men's and women's Swimming and Diving teams finished in the top four at the SEC Championships.

After six grueling days inside the James E. Martin Aquatic Center, the Auburn men finished second (1104 points) matching its effort from last season and scoring the most points since 2016. For the women, the fourth place (879.5 points) was the highest since 2016 and the most points since 2006.

"This is a hard league in any sport,” said head coach Ryan Wochomurka. “To be in the top third puts you in a position to be top 10 and top 25 nationally.

"We have some things we need to clean up before the NCAA championships," Wochomurka said. "But just excited for what's coming for the kids next month."

🔼 That’s a Donut For USF. No. 11 Women's tennis shut out South Florida by a 7-0 score on Sunday in Tampa. The Tigers claimed the doubles point and won five of the six singles matches in straight sets to earn the dominating team victory

"Today was a great match to bounce back from the loss against Pepperdine," said Auburn head coach Lester Cook. "We're happy to end on a good note, and we're looking forward to getting the SEC matches started."

The win moves the Tigers above .500 with a 6-5 record before SEC opening weekend. Auburn will begin its Southeastern Conference schedule at home on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. CT against Kentucky at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.

🔼 A Fitting Finale. Saving her best for last, Cassie Stevens scored a career-high 9.95 on floor in her final event at Neville Arena to win the all-around Friday and lead No. 12 Auburn to a come-from-behind 197.425-197.0 win over No. 13 Missouri.

"It's the culmination of five years of nothing but love and support from people in this building," Stevens said.

"There's a lot of emotion on this night," Auburn coach Jeff Graba said. "These seniors, in particular, really feel an attachment to our fanbase. I'm really happy that they finished it really well, and we ended this the right way, with a good victory and people hitting their stride at the end."

Auburn will spend March on the road with three meets before the SEC Championships, beginning next Friday, March 1, at Georgia at 6 p.m. CT.
