Bodda Getta Daily Brew 11/30: SEC Strong

Auburn secures a commanding victory in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge.

Good morning. Johni Broome dominated Virginia Tech to the tune of 30 points and 13 rebounds to lead Auburn to a 74-57 victory in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge Wednesday at Neville Arena, the Tigers' fifth straight win and 48TH consecutive non-conference home triumph.

Broome surpassed his previous Auburn career-high of 27 points while coming within two points of his collegiate best at Morehead State.

"My teammates encouraged me to get that," said Broome, who was 11-for-19 from the field and 8 of 13 from the free-throw line. "Seeing my teammates being more excited than I am, that's big..."

Auburn (5-1) travels to Boone, North Carolina, Saturday to play Appalachian State at noon CT on ESPN2.

🔼. Do You Know Where You Are? You’re in the Jungle. Much of Auburn’s win over Virginia Tech was about valuing possessions at an elite level. The Tigers committed a season-low eight turnovers while forcing 21, leading to a commanding 30-5 lead in points off turnovers.

"A great defensive effort to turn that team over 21 teams," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. "I think the kids are starting to get excited about guarding in such a way that can frustrate the opponent, which leads to transition and some fun things."

Tre Donaldson scored seven consecutive Auburn points early in the second half to restore the Tigers' double-digit lead after Virginia Tech had gotten within seven.

Broome took over from there, scoring 14 points in the second half after netting 16 in the first.

Students in The Jungle, who filled their courtside seats 90 minutes before tipoff, chanted "SEC, SEC!" as the game concluded.

"That one matters double because it's the ACC/SEC Challenge," Pearl said. "If we're going to establish Auburn as one of the better teams in the SEC, you've got to be able to be trusted to deliver against that league."

🔼  Scheer Determination. Part of a star-studded class that arrived at Auburn last year after an unorthodox, Zoom-centric recruiting process, sophomore Madison Scheer chose the Tigers not for what they had accomplished but because of head coach Brent Crouch's vision for what volleyball on the Plains could become—the marathon, not the sprint.

"The promise he made to us," Scheer said. "The plan was really important."

The journey began with Scheer and her fellow freshmen helping lead Auburn to the program's second NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022 and Scheer making the SEC All-Freshman Team along the way.

This season, she raised the bar even higher, earning All-SEC honors, twice being named SEC Offensive Player of the Week, and becoming the second player in program history to be named AVCA National Player of the Week.

"A huge award,” Scheer said of the All-SEC recognition, “but I seriously couldn't do it without my teammates. They're constantly getting me the ball in good situations."

While teammates battled injuries that resulted in position changes, Scheer stayed healthy and remained in her outside hitter location.

"She's incredibly steady," Crouch said. "Very consistent, and she's reaping the rewards."

Auburn's ascension to becoming a top 25 program corresponds with volleyball's growth in the Southeastern Conference, a trend that attracted Crouch to the Plains from Southern California four years ago.

Scheer and the seventh-seeded Tigers departed Tuesday for Louisville, Kentucky, where they'll face Western Michigan today at 3 p.m. CT.

🔼 One For All. Auburn senior Elijah McAllister was named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team for football

The SEC names a Community Service Team for each of its 21-league sponsored sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community through superior service efforts.

Though he's still in his first year at Auburn after transferring from Vanderbilt, he’s already made an impact on and off the field, especially in the community. He was voted team captain at Auburn this season, a title he also held at Vanderbilt. He's currently pursuing his Ph.D. in education.

For McAllister, his passion has been helping young people and families in Auburn and home in New Jersey through his All For One, One For All Foundation. His efforts through the foundation have included sponsoring food banks, school supply giveaways, sports camps, holiday shopping trips and a number of read-aloud and motivational speaking appearances.

Prior to the season, McAllister was selected as a member of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and was also a nominee for the Wuerffel Trophy.

🔼 So We Meet Again. It's a rematch of what turned out to be last year's season finale for Auburn women's basketball on Thursday night when the Tigers host Clemson at Neville Arena. Game time is 8 p.m. CT.

Auburn (4-2) is coming off a 68-45 home win over Alabama A&M Sunday, while Clemson (5-3) defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 92-66 their last time out.

The teams met just over eight months ago in Clemson in the second round of the WNIT, where Clemson eked out a 56-55 victory to end Auburn's 2022-23 season.

Thursday's game is part of the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge. All 14 SEC schools are facing an opponent from the ACC in both men's and women's basketball from Nov. 28-30. The battle of the Tigers will be the next-to-last contest to tip off during the challenge.

For a limited time, as part of Auburn's "Cyber Week" promotion, fans can purchase tickets for Thursday's game and most remaining home games for just $4 by clicking on the link at AuburnTigers.com. This price is only available when tickets are purchased online.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: In previous seasons, the ACC competed against the Big Ten in the annual Big Ten/ACC challenge. The event came to an end last season, however, due to a new media rights deal. From there, the newly formed ACC/SEC Challenge emerged.

In the latest AP Top 25 poll, eight teams from the ACC and SEC were ranked, making this some must-watch hoops indeed.

Also noteworthy: CBS sports analysts predicted Auburn’s win over Virginia Tech nearly straight across the board. They were certainly on to something!

🐅 Have a great Thursday, y’all!
