Bodda Getta Daily Brew 3/25 - Scout's Honor

17 players worked out for scouts at the Auburn Pro Day, some for the last time

Good morning. In 2019, Jaylin Simpson, Nehemiah Pritchett and Zion Puckett arrived at Auburn together. Three years later, D.J. James joined them as a transfer from Oregon. On Friday, the defensive back quartet worked out on the Plains for the last time together at Auburn's Pro Day

"My last little hoorah with D.J., Mighty and Puck," Simpson said. "It was fun to do that and just continue to show why I feel like I'm one of the best safeties in the draft. We all did amazing."

In all, 17 players worked out for scouts at the Auburn Pro Day.

🔼 Down, Never Out. No. 17 Auburn used a six-run sixth inning to come back from a four-run deficit and defeat No. 1 Arkansas 8-6 in the series finale Saturday afternoon at Plainsman Park. The two-run victory comes after a pair of one-run losses to start the series, preceded by a one-run win against South Alabama Tuesday.

The game was played in front of a program-record 5,087 fans, surpassing the previous record from 2002 by more than 350 fans.

🔼 Sticking the SEC Landing. The Auburn gymnastics team scored 196.775 in the first session of the 2024 SEC Championship Saturday at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, finishing seventh overall. Auburn will await its placement for the 2024 NCAA Regional Championship. The selection show is slated for 11 a.m. CT on Monday, March 25.

"I'm really proud of this team," head coach Jeff Graba said. "Obviously, we were a little tight at the beginning, and I think our nerves were showing. But we really pushed all the way to the end."

🔼 Making Waves. Five more All-American Honors highlighted the final day of the 2024 Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships for the Auburn Tigers. Finishing with 54 points, head coach Ryan Wochomurka's crew snagged 19th place, its highest finish since 2019. Attention now turns to Indianapolis, Indiana, when the men take on the NCAA Championships March 27-30.

"I'm really proud of this group here in Athens, the way they fought all week," said Wochomurka. "To produce all year long like they have, finish in the top four in the SEC, and to be top 20 in the country is something special.”

🔼 Brutal Buzzer-Beater. All-American Johni Broome recorded his 14th double-double, and fourth-seeded Auburn had a chance to advance with a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but 13th-seeded Yale upset the Tigers 78-76 in the NCAA Tournament Friday. Auburn fans comprised a small but vocal contingent among the 11,051 in attendance, shouting encouragement to the SEC Tournament champions.

"Auburn had a historic year," Coach Bruce Pearl said. "This team has done so many great things so I'm very proud of them."

"That's the best basketball team we've beaten in Yale basketball history, as far as I'm concerned," said Yale coach James Jones.

🔼 Sophia = Auburn Personified. Junior Sophia Groth of the No. 14 Auburn gymnastics team was named to the SEC Community Service Team. The ultra-talented gymnast has been a key member of the Auburn community and has been serving the greater Auburn area since the moment she came to the Plains.

Groth has continued to serve on Title IX panels and has been active with Habitat for Humanity, the Boys & Girls Club, the Hudson Family Foundation, Baby Steps, Christian Care Ministries and many other organizations.

🔼 Homebound. No. 25 Auburn softball (15-9-1, 2-7 SEC) found early offensive success at Davis Diamond on Sunday, but No. 12 Texas A&M (28-4, 8-1 SEC) rallied late to walk off a 14-6 victory in five innings to sweep the series.

Auburn returns to Jane B. Moore Field next weekend to face No. 7 Tennessee in a three-game series. Friday's opener is set for 5 p.m. CT. The Tigers will honor senior outfielder Makayla Packer during the homestand.

🔼 Road Dubs Are the Best Dubs. No. 18 Auburn finished its Mississippi weekend road trip with two wins after a 4-0 shutout win over Mississippi State on Sunday. The Tigers dominated the doubles point, then tacked on three straight set singles wins for their sixth conference victory this season.

"The girls were impressive in doubles yet again," Auburn interim head coach Lester Cook said. “Mississippi State has some great players, and it was important not to take them lightly, which can happen when playing a team that hasn't won a conference match yet.”

🔼 Sunday Was a Breeze. It was a chilly, windy Sunday on the links, but that didn't stop the Tigers from a top-tier showing in round one of the Seahawk Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, North Carolina. No. 2 Auburn men's golf opened the tournament in first with a 12-over 300 first round

Everyone will pick up where they left off in another 7:30 a.m. CT shotgun start this morning. Round two will be completed, followed directly by the final round.
