Bodda Getta Daily Brew 5/6: Rolled Over Tide

Auburn Softball has now won back-to-back series over Alabama

Good Morning, Auburn Family. Behind her first shutout in SEC play, Annabelle Widra and Auburn softball blanked No. 17 Alabama 3-0 Saturday at Jane B. Moore Field to secure Auburn's second straight series win over its in-state rival.

Behind a season-high seven strikeouts, Widra kept the Tide off balance at the plate. She scattered four hits and did not issue a walk on Saturday. Her only free pass of the day was a hit-by-pitch in the sixth inning.

The Tigers now play Georgia in the 2024 SEC Tournament at Jane B. Moore Field on Tuesday, May 7, at 4 p.m. CT.

🔼 In Walk-Off Fashion.  In a back-and-forth series finale, Auburn scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, with the winning run crossing home plate on a walk-off passed ball to defeat Ole Miss 10-9 Sunday evening at Plainsman Park.

After a three-run double gave Ole Miss a 9-8 lead in the top of the ninth, Auburn was down to its last out with nobody on base in the bottom of the inning. Mason Maners drilled a triple down the right field line, and pinch hitter Kaleb Freeman drove him in to tie the game with a single to center. Five Auburn players in Stanfield, Irish, Belyeu, Green and Fabian all collected multiple hits, and the team's 15 hits were the second most in a game this season.

🔼 Court is Now in Session. Jordan Szabo (SAY-bo), a two-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Assistant Coach of the Year, has been named Auburn women's tennis head coach. A former men's tennis player at Texas A&M, Szabo has been the associate head women's coach at his alma mater for the past two seasons and is in his seventh season with the women's program in College Station.

Szabo has helped the Aggie women to three consecutive Southeastern Conference regular-season titles and four straight conference tournament final appearances. In the NCAA Tournament, they have reached the Elite Eight the last two seasons and the Sweet 16 every year since 2019.

🔼  No Matter How You Slice It. Auburn Tennis had an action-packed weekend. On Friday, the No. 24 Auburn men’s tennis team pulled out a close victory over 41st-ranked Pepperdine during the opening round of the NCAA Championship in Tucson, Arizona.

No. 17 Women's tennis completed a 4-0 shutout of BYU on Saturday in Berkeley, California, in a match that lasted under two-and-a-half hours.

Unfortunately, both the men’s and women’s teams were eliminated in the next round.

Men’s Tennis dropped its NCAA Championship second-round match to ninth-ranked Arizona by a 4-0 score on Saturday. With the loss, the Tigers' season comes to a close with an 18-11 overall record. This season marked the first time Auburn has reached the second round of the championship since 2012.

The No. 17 Auburn women’s tennis team ended its 2024 campaign with a 4-0 loss to California in the second round of the NCAA Championship on Saturday evening. The Tigers narrowly lost a tightly contested doubles point before dropping three singles matches in straight sets.
