🔼 Quick Off The Blocks. Making waves? More like a near-tsunami. It's only one week into the Auburn swimming & diving season and senior Kensley Merritt and freshman Harrison Ranier have been named SEC Women's Swimmer of the Week and SEC Men's Freshman of the Week, respectively.

Kensley Merritt was part of an elite group of Tigers who had their first competition at the SMU Classic in Dallas, Texas over the weekend. She turned heads in the 100 back when she hit the wall with a personal best of 52.59. Winning the B flight, the senior's time was the fastest of the meet, the third-quickest in the country, and an NCAA B cut.

She would return to the pool in the 200 back to post a 1:55.73, another B flight victory, and the second-fastest in the nation. Merritt also aided the Auburn 800 free relay squad that finished third, all in an effort that saw the Tigers finish third overall in an early-season, high-stakes meet.

Harrison Ranier played a pivotal role in the win against the Cardinals, winning his first individual event in the 400 IM, clocking in at a personal best of 3:52.15. A day later, his 200 IM time of 1:48.50 was also the fastest of his career and another Auburn victory.

He would also grab third in both the 100 fly (48.24) and the 200 back (1:48.90). Ranier was also part of a solid 200 free relay squad that scored important points during the bout.

🔼 Just Plain Cool. Continuing in the series of spotlighting new softball players making their home on the Plains, we introduce true freshman and utility player Mariah Penta.

When it comes to Auburn athletes, it seems to be that their choice of sports is often in the genes, as is the case for this Chesapeake City, Maryland native. Mariah’s mother, Susan, was a pitcher at the University of Delaware and sister Maddie is the reigning SEC Pitcher of the year.

Some Quick Hits on Mariah:

  • Her father, Mark, is her biggest influence in her softball career, and he has always been by her side.

  • On why she chose Auburn: “I chose Auburn because I loved the traditions and the ways that students get involved in the university. There's something here for everyone!”

  • She doesn’t have any pregame rituals but she loves to “jam to music” before she plays to loosen up. On her playlist? Taylor Swift, of course!

  • On what makes Auburn softball special: “Auburn softball is special because the team brings together talented girls from all over the country who become a family.

  • As for the teammates who have helped her adjust since arriving at Auburn, Mariah said, “I love going to support other sports, so I've been attending some of the other games with Abbey (Smith) and Annabelle (Widra). They have made it much easier being so far away from home.”

  • On the one word to describe herself on and off the field, the exercise science major who hopes to get her nursing degree said, “On the field, I am very focused. Off the field, I'm more outgoing. When it's time to play, I can get very serious.”

🤔 TIGER TRIVIA

A seismic opportunity. Years ago, Auburn traveled to Tiger Stadium to play LSU in what would become called “The Earthquake Game.” Auburn had kept LSU to zero points for 58 minutes but, with 1:47 left, LSU quarterback Tommy Hodson found running back Eddie Fuller for a touchdown on fourth and goal.

It’s been said that the crowd eruption was so loud, it registered as an earthquake on the seismograph at LSU’s Howe-Russell Geoscience Complex, though many consider this to be the stuff of urban legends.

Our question today—what year did that matchup take place?

If you think you know the answer, scroll down to the bottom to find out.

🐅 ONE BIG THING

Bodda getta win. This week’s Reese’s Senior Bowl is highlighting Auburn cornerback Jaylin Simpson. All eyes have been on him as of late, and Sports Illustrated named him as one of five Auburn players who emerged as winners despite their narrow loss to Georgia.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 1988

Auburn most likely would have gone on to play Notre Dame for the national championship had they beaten LSU, as they finished that season with six consecutive wins and only gave up 31 points during that time. As it was, Auburn and LSU shared the SEC crown, and Auburn went to the Sugar Bowl.

Looking forward to shaking things up this Saturday!

🐅 Have a great Thursday, y’all
