Bodda Getta Daily Brew 1/22: Rebel Yell...Into the Void

Auburn MBB takes down No. 22 Ole Miss to win 11 straight, taking possession of the SEC lead

Good morning. The SEC's lone remaining unbeaten team, No. 13 Auburn, used sizzling shooting and exceptional depth to dispatch No. 22 Ole Miss 82-59 Saturday at Neville Arena, the Tigers' 11th consecutive win.

"To play that well and control the game like we did was impressive," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said.

Auburn's bench outscored Ole Miss 40-18, including 12 points from Dylan Cardwell on 5-of-6 shooting in the first meeting between the programs when both were ranked in the top 25.

"Because they played fewer minutes, we can play hard," Pearl said.

Looking to win its 12th consecutive game and improve to 6-0 in the SEC, Auburn (16-2, 5-0) travels to Tuscaloosa Wednesday to play Alabama at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN and the Auburn Sports Network.

🔼 Ye Ole Thrashing. "We're deep at every position, and we have each other's back," said Lior Berman after Saturday’s win in men’s basketball over the Ole Miss Rebels. "If one guy is off, we've got another guy coming in, and we're going to support each other through that. Having that at each position has allowed us to be effective every night."

John Broome and Jaylin Williams each scored 13 points to lead Auburn, which made 58.2 percent of its shots, including 8-of-18 3-pointers (44.4 percent), and played 11 players for at least 10 minutes.

Broome drew some of the night's loudest cheers during a sequence that saw him bank in a 3-pointer then block the Rebels' shot at the other end.

Ten Tigers combined for 19 assists, including three apiece from Aden Holloway, Tre Donaldson and Cardwell.

🔼 A Banner Bonner Day. On the day Auburn retired the jersey of all-time scoring leader DeWanna Bonner, the Tigers used a stellar start and a fabulous finish to defeat Alabama 78-65 Sunday at Neville Arena.

In the first and fourth quarters, Auburn outscored Alabama 50-20, defeating their in-state rival for the first time in their past 10 meetings.

"Really feels good to get my first win over Alabama, and this team's first win in a while," Auburn coach Johnnie Harris said. "It was special to do this in front of our alumni. We prepared well. Our team was focused, they were locked in. We wanted to set the tone, and I felt like we did."

Honesty Scott-Grayson led Auburn with 19 points, JaMya Mingo-Young scored 12 and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and Savannah Scott added 10.

Auburn (13-6, 2-4) is off until next Monday, Jan. 29, when it welcomes Georgia to Neville Arena, where the Tigers are 10-2 this season.

🔼 Low Crimson Tide. On the road and in hostile territory, both the men's and women's Swim and Dive Teams rose to the occasion on Friday, toppling in-state foe No. 19/18 Alabama in the final dual meet of the year. The Auburn men have now won four straight over the Crimson Tide.

One more meet remains before the Tigers host the 2024 SEC Championships. Auburn will welcome a bevy of competitors for the Auburn Invitational and the First Chance Meet, Feb. 9-10 inside James E. Martin Aquatic Center.

🔼 The Crowd Was Floored. The No. 12 Auburn gymnastics team again finished with a flourish on floor, earning a pair of 9.925s and two 9.9s Friday at Neville Arena to score 197.025 for the second consecutive meet.

No. 7 Florida (4-0, 1-0 SEC) claimed the victory with a 197.325. Auburn's (1-4, 0-2 SEC) 49.45 on floor represented the Tigers' highest score of the meet.

"Great finish. Really proud of the team," Auburn coach Jeff Graba said. "I think we're a 49.5 team on floor. The secret will be the other three events.”

Fifth-year Aria Brusch led off the floor with a crowd-pleaser, tying her career high with a 9.9 from the judges.

"We know how strong the floor squad is, especially being the last event at home," fifth-year Cassie Stevens said. "The energy in the arena helps fuel us. We get so hyped for floor. Ready to leave it all out there and have a party."

After two consecutive home meets, the Tigers travel next Friday to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to compete against the No. 4 Razorbacks.

🔼 It’s Baseball, Optimized. Auburn baseball and head coach Butch Thompson announced Friday the addition of Adam Nebel as a graduate assistant of sports science.

In his role with the program, Nebel will use his extensive understanding of the KinaTrax motion capture technology to work collaboratively with the coaching staff, strength and conditioning staff and athletic training staff to integrate different aspects of the players' lives to optimize health and performance.

Nebel previously worked as a student athletic trainer and researcher with the Arkansas baseball program from 2020-22.

Coming off back-to-back regional host bids for the first time in program history, Auburn opens the 2024 season with a three-game series against Eastern Kentucky beginning Friday, Feb. 16, at Plainsman Park.
