Bodda Getta Daily Brew 10/25: No Fair Weather Fans

Today, Coach Freeze thanks Auburn football fans for being tried and true.

Good morning. There’s no way to sugarcoat how difficult it can be for fans when their team experiences a string of losses, especially when they’ve done serious battles with major contenders (ahem, Georgia), but Auburn football coach Hugh Freeze knows that Tigers fans are made of tougher stuff.

Freeze thanked fans in a recent presser, saying their loyalty “speaks volumes.” Still at the forefront of recruiting, Auburn has plenty more in store for fans.

🔼 Freeze Fan Mail. No, not his fan mail, but rather, the other way around. In the last two home games in Jordan-Hare Stadium, the fans did not disappoint. They showed up and played a major role in helping Auburn go toe-to-toe with No. 1 Georgia and No. 12 Ole Miss. That support has not gotten lost on first-year head coach Hugh Freeze, who thanked the fans Monday in his weekly press conference.

"I felt like we had a chance at two of those at home," Freeze said. "I think it speaks volumes for how our kids are playing, and I know it speaks volumes for our incredible fans at Jordan-Hare. I just continue to be amazed. It's a great home environment.”

Freeze also recognizes that it would be easy for them to jump ship after the recent losses, but he knows that Auburn fans are no bandwagoners.

"I know that they've endured disappointing years and certainly are in the growing pains with us right now, but their energy and their support – I just can't say enough about that for them. They sense what I sense, and that is that ... man, we are Auburn. We should take a backseat to no one in recruiting. That's the approach we're taking. While there are some certain bumps in the roads – and people make of those what they will – the time is coming when people will sense what Auburn truly is, like our fans already do. I'm just thankful for them."

The Tigers are back in Jordan-Hare Stadium again this week to face Mississippi State. Are you gameday ready?

🔼 Playing the Long Game. Auburn Athletics is very well known for its elite coaching staff, and women’s golf head coach Melissa Luellen is certainly no exception. Thankfully, Luellen just signed a contract for an extension that will keep her on The Plains through the 2027-28 season, the university announced Tuesday.

"Thank you to John Cohen and Joy Vrbka for supporting me by extending my contract," she said. "It is an honor to lead the Auburn women's golf program, and I look forward to the next several years."

Luellen is in her eighth season as the Auburn head coach after taking the helm prior to the 2016-17 season and has led the Tigers to four NCAA Championship appearances. Auburn finished the season as national semifinalists in both 2019 and 2022. In 2021, Luellen guided the Tigers to the 10th SEC Championship in program history.

She came to Auburn after spending the previous 13 years as the head coach at Arizona State, leading the program to an NCAA title in 2009. She spent the two years before that as the head coach at the University of Tulsa. In her 24 years as a head coach, Luellen has won five conference titles and made 18 NCAA Championship appearances. The Tulsa, Oklahoma, native has also coached 22 All-Americans and five conference players of the year.

The next team event on the Auburn women's golf schedule will be the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, which will be played February 4-6 in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico.

🔼 Beyond the Bases. On the latest episode of Newcomer Scoop With Tanner & Coop, the duo sits down with Auburn baseball player and freshman Trevor Booton.

They asked the right-handed pitcher from LaGrange, Georgia, why Auburn was the right place for him.

“I would say it was definitely the family and the coaches here,” Booton said. “It really made it feel like home when I was going through the recruiting process.”

Check out the rest of the interview to find out what performer, dead or alive, Booton would want to see, his favorite Disney movie, and why he thinks that “Instagram reels are low-key on the rise.”

🤔 TIGER TRIVIA

Fielding Questions. Because this Brew, in particular, is an homage to the amazing Auburn football fans, today’s trivia question is about the home stadium.

Of course, we all know the field as Jordan-Hare, home to the Tigers and the most electric atmosphere one can experience, but did you know that it’s officially called “Pat Dye Field at Jordan-Hair Stadium”?

Today’s question—what year did it get that name?

Think you know? Scroll down to the bottom to find out.

🐅 ONE BIG THING

In the Zone. With the NBA kicking off its regular season, the Tigers would like to wish these Auburn-made players the best of luck. 💪🏼

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 2005

The turf officially became known as Pat Dye Field at Jordan-Hare Stadium before the 2005 Iron Bowl. Pat Dye Field at Jordan-Hare Stadium, the nation's 11th-largest on-campus stadium, with a capacity of 88,043, has served as home to the Auburn Tigers since 1939.

The stadium is named for Ralph "Shug" Jordan, Auburn's all-time winningest football coach, and Clifford Leroy Hare, a member of Auburn's first football team, president of the old Southern Conference, and longtime chairman of Auburn's Faculty Athletic Committee.

Dye, who served as head coach and athletics director at Auburn from 1981-92 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December 2005, led Auburn to a 99-39-4 record and four SEC Championships in his 12 seasons on the Plains.
