Bodda Getta Daily Brew 10/20: No Despair, Jordan-Hare

Today, Coach Freeze relies on the Jordan-Hare effect to face rival Ole Miss.

Good morning. Those prone to hang-dog reactions, be forewarned—Coach Freeze has no time for that with the Ole Miss rivalry game.

“There's certainly no time to hang our heads or feel sorry for ourselves,” the Auburn football coach said in a recent presser. “I'm thankful that we're at home in Jordan-Hare. We need it to be at its all-time best, and I know it will be.”

Challenge accepted, especially with this weekend’s stripe-out.

🔼 On The Brink To Dig Pink. The No. 23 Tigers (14-4, 4-3) are back on the Plains for the first of two home matches this weekend when they take on Missouri (12-7, 4-4) this evening at 6 p.m. CT.

Tonight’s match marks Auburn's annual Dig Pink Night to raise awareness for Breast Cancer research. The first 250 fans in the building receive a free Auburn Volleyball Rally Towel and a pink shaker. Doors open at 5 p.m. CT. The match will also be televised live on the SEC Network.

Head coach Brent Crouch is narrowing in on a major milestone in his career on the Plains. Sitting at 49 wins at Auburn, Crouch would become the fastest coach to 50 wins in the rally-scoring era if he achieved the feat this season.

Missouri holds a 14-3 record over Auburn in a matchup dating back to 1996. However, since Crouch arrived on the Plains, his Tigers are 2-2, including Auburn's first win in Columbia in program history last season.

The Tigers are back in Neville Arena on Sunday, Oct. 22, for a date with South Carolina at 1 p.m. CT. Sunday is also Disney Day on the Plains. The first 250 kids in the building receive a free Disney-themed key chain.

🔼 Don’t Sleep On Auburn Hoops. It was the last stop of the day for Jaylin Williams and Johni Broome at this year's SEC Tipoff event. Holding one of those tiny microphones, Williams was being asked everything from his favorite musical artist to who was the best dresser on the team.

The interview ended with one final question. What is the expectation for this Auburn team?

"Win championships," Williams responded.

Williams, who was representing Auburn for the second straight year at SEC Tipoff, was part of a regular-season SEC championship his junior year (2021-22). The Tigers won an SEC Tournament title the year before he arrived (2018-19) and another regular-season conference championship the year before that (2017-18).

This year, Auburn was picked to finish sixth in the SEC by the media.

"That's perfectly fine," Broome said when asked Wednesday if people were sleeping on Auburn. "They can sleep if they want. They're going to get woken up here soon."

With Broome and Williams, Auburn returns two of its top three leading scorers from last year's team. Broome, a preseason First Team All-SEC selection, led the Tigers in points (14.2), rebounds (8.4) and blocks (2.4) per game.

🔼 Life Beyond The Balance Beam. Filling her notebook with networking nuggets and career advice, gymnast Cassie Stevens represented Auburn at the Women Leaders in Sports convention last week in New Orleans.

"A great opportunity, great experience," Stevens said. "I learned a lot and met a lot of incredible women who are doing great things in the industry and leading the way."

The conference informed Stevens about the gamut of potential careers in sports, from coaching to administration to academic advising and development.

The SEC sponsored student-athletes from all 14 league institutions, including gymnasts from Auburn, Florida, and Alabama.

"It was fun to catch up with them and talk," said Stevens, who left the leadership seminar with an appreciation for the resources and relationships Auburn provides. "It made me feel very privileged and honored to be an SEC student-athlete. I felt so blessed to be a part of Auburn University and the SEC and all the wonderful people we have here right at home. I'm so blessed to be here."

Working on her master's degree after graduating from Auburn University with a bachelor's in information systems management with a 4.0 GPA, Stevens plans to serve as a graduate assistant for Auburn Gymnastics in 2024-25 after competing for a fifth season for the Tigers in 2024.

"I'm leaning toward possibly coaching," she said. "That remains to be seen. I'm excited to be a GA next year to get a better perspective behind the scenes in operations and coaching and what I might want to do."
