Bodda Getta Daily Brew 1/9: News That Defies Gravity

Auburn Gymnastics secures second-highest ranking for a season opener in program history

Good morning. The Auburn gymnastics team stands at No. 11 this week, based on the overall team score from the season-opening weekend.

Auburn debuted the 2024 season with a 196.600 at the Mean Girls Super 16 Gymnastics Championships in Las Vegas this past Saturday—the second-highest season opener for Auburn in program history.

"It's obviously really early in the season, and I'm more interested in how we're ranked closer to the end," head coach Jeff Graba said. "However, I think being ranked 11th right now is exciting for such a team that has many new faces and many experienced gymnasts in new positions."

Auburn hosts No. 9 Kentucky in Neville Arena on Jan. 12. The Tigers and the Wildcats will go head-to-head at 7:30 p.m. CT, and the meet will be televised on SEC Network.

🔼 Born Into Orange and Blue. Now in his fourth and final year on the Plains, senior Carter Sobera cherishes the support he's gained from the Auburn Family.

Sobera has felt nothing but love from the time he stepped foot on campus at Auburn. He credits his teammates and coaches for helping to experience the genuine meaning of the Auburn Family, on and off the court.

From right down U.S. Route 280, Sobera graduated from Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham where he was a state champion his junior year and finished runner-up as a senior. He was raised in orange and blue and wanted to continue the family legacy at Auburn, where both his mom and dad went to school.

As a walk-on, Sobera was hopeful for playing time during his career. He's gotten that opportunity here and there, including against Alabama in 2022 when he scored the 100th point for Auburn at the free-throw line. When shooting the free throw, he had no clue he was in that position, but to this day, it remains his favorite memory.

Now in his final season, Sobera is most excited about playing in Neville Arena one last time with the "best fan base in the country."

"Auburn basketball has taught me to not let emotions dictate decisions, but rather be consistent, disciplined and focused," he said.

🔼 The Road to the Hall of Fame. When Larry Chapman signed to play basketball at Auburn, he had never been to the Plains. He was a three-year starter for Joel Eaves and Bill Lynn, then went to work as the freshman coach. Chapman recruited Auburn's first African American player, Henry Harris. Eventually, Chapman settled into a hall-of-fame career as the winningest coach in AUM history. This spring, he'll be inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.

The remarkable career of Larry Chapman is featured in this Talking Tigers Podcast, brought to you by Alabama Public Health.
