Emotions ran high for MBB Coach Bruce Pearl and players as SEC victory sinks in

Good morning. As the final seconds ticked away in the SEC title game on Sunday, head coach Bruce Pearl started to tear up.

“I lost my dad in August,” an emotional Pearl told Marty Smith after the game. “He was my biggest fan. This is for these kids. And how about the way Auburn showed up today. But for me, I’ve got to thank my father.”

“We did it,” an equally emotional Chad Baker-Mazara kept saying to his parents, who weren’t able to make it to the game. “We did it.”

🔼 We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Scroll. If you’ve been logging Johni Broome’s awards and nominations this MBB season, it’s time for a new notebook. He earned NABC Division I All-District First Team honors for the third time in his collegiate career on Tuesday.

The junior forward/center recorded his 2,000th career point in the SEC Championship game against Florida with 19 points and 11 rebounds—his 59th career double-double, which ranks sixth nationally among active NCAA career leaders. Broome is currently on a 25-game double-digit scoring streak. He has tabulated 2,003 career points, 1,191 rebounds, 178 assists, 342 blocks, and 100 steals to date.

🔼 Consistency is Key. Head coach Ryan Wochomurka and the No. 16 Auburn Tigers travel to Athens, Georgia, for the 2024 Women's Swimming and Diving National Championships, March 20-23, to be streamed live on ESPN+. Ten Tigers earned their tickets to the NCAAs this year. Action begins inside Gabrielsen Natatorium on Wednesday, March 20, at 5 p.m. CT with the 200 medley and 800 free relays.

For Wochomurka, eight of his squad return from last year's NCAA Championships when the team delivered 14 points in Knoxville, Tennessee to finish 26th overall. It was the best finish under the then-second-year head coach and the best since 2019.

🔼 Pitch Positively Perfect. Auburn's pitching staff turned in arguably its best performance of the season, leading the No. 17 Tigers to a 2-1 win against South Alabama Tuesday night at Riverwalk Stadium. Auburn continues Southeastern Conference play with a three-game series vs. No. 1 Arkansas (17-2, 3-0 SEC) Thursday through Saturday at Plainsman Park.

Four pitchers, Christian Herberholz, Alex Petrovic, Parker Carlson, and Dylan Watts, combined to hold South Alabama to one run on five hits, one walk, and 13 strikeouts. The one run matched a season low, and the 13 strikeouts were one shy of a season-high.

🔼 The Nitty Gritty. It was a back-and-forth affair Tuesday night at the Troy Softball Complex, but No. 25 Auburn softball (15-6-1) held on to a 4-3 lead to take down Troy (22-10) in 10 innings.

"It was just grit," said head coach Mickey Dean. "To come on the road midweek after playing a three-game series and face a really good Troy team. The good thing is that we kept working and never let them take the lead.”
