Bodda Getta Daily Brew 7/22: Mr. Let's Work

Auburn linebacker Eugene Asanta took to Media Days to share what his "let's work" motto is all about

22

Good Morning, Auburn Family. From scout team to leading tackler to preseason All-SEC, Auburn linebacker Eugene Asante’s ascension stems from his mantra.

Let’s work.

“Being an undersized linebacker, people try to put stipulations on you or try to put narratives on you,” Asante said at SEC Media Days. “I feel like ‘Let's work’ embodies everything I believe in. Relentless effort. If you believe I'm undersized, that's fine, but I'm going to show you the way I work, the way I play the game of football, and the way my passion and the love I have for this sport.”

Go here for more on Asante’s love for the coaching staff, his father and mentor and his final season on The Plains.

🔼 Fab Four. The SEC’s leading returning rusher, Auburn running back Jarquez Hunter, has been named to the 2024 preseason Media Days All-SEC First-Team.

In three seasons on the Plains, Hunter has rushed for 2,170 yards and 17 touchdowns, adding 403 career receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Auburn’s Alex McPherson earned two preseason honors, making the First Team as a kickoff specialist and the Third Team as a placekicker. As a freshman in 2023, McPherson did not miss a kick, going 13-for-13 on field goals and 40-for-40 on extra points.

Linebacker Eugene Asante was named to the Third Team after leading Auburn with 86 tackles last season. Defensive back Keionte Scott also earned Third-Team honors as a return specialist after leading the SEC in punt return average with 14.8 yards per return.

🔼 Trey, Tennis, Tigers—Fit to a Tee. Former Jacksonville State men’s tennis head coach Trey Morris joined the Auburn men’s tennis staff as an assistant coach, as announced by Tigers head coach Bobby Reynolds.

After serving as an assistant coach at Jacksonville State in 2023, Morris posted a 15-10 overall record in his first season as the Gamecocks head coach in 2024. The team also had five players receive all-conference honors.

The Colbert, Georgia native also spent three seasons as the head coach and Director of Tennis at Montana State. He was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Bobcats to a conference championship and posting an 18-8 overall record.

🔼 Auburn’s #1 Fan. For many people, family means everything. It’s more than football. But at Auburn, senior wide receiver Greg McConico Jr. gets the best of both worlds.

“I’d always been around Auburn,” McConico said. “I had family members that played here, like Marlon Davidson. I’m still an Auburn fan…My receiver coach Marcus Davis played at Auburn, and I used to watch him as a fan – just being here is so special for me.”

McConico started his college career at West Alabama, starting every game as a sophomore before transferring to Auburn before his junior year.
