Bodda Getta Daily Brew 3/5: Mission Mizzery Accomplished

Auburn men's basketball hits 100 points in win at Missouri

Good morning. As Dylan Cardwell lined up a 3-pointer in the final minute Tuesday night, the only thing in doubt was whether No. 13 Auburn would reach 100 points. Cardwell buried the triple, and the Tigers hit 100 in a 101-74 win at Missouri

Cardwell's 3-pointer gave him 12 points for the night, matching his career high, and he finished as one of five Auburn players in double figures.

"We had the advantage on the inside with Jaylin Williams and Johni Broome and Dylan Cardwell and Chaney Johnson," said head coach Bruce Pearl. "I can't remember in my coaching career having four guys in double figures.

With the win, Auburn finished with a winning record (5-4) on the road in SEC games for the third time in the last seven seasons – a feat Pearl is proud of.

"Neville Arena deserves a lot of credit," he said. "The Jungle deserves a lot of credit for having been a great home-court advantage, maybe the best in college basketball.

Auburn (23-7, 12-5) will return home to Neville Arena on Saturday for the regular-season finale against Georgia. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Strokes of Absolute Genius. Auburn is leaving the Pinehurst Intercollegiate with a double-helping of victories as the Tigers swept both the team and individual titles behind a 12-over group performance and a hard-nosed 1-under finish from freshman Jackson Koivun Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 2.

It is the first time Auburn has swept titles at a non-home event since Oct. 25, 2022, when Brendan Valdes led the Tigers to a pair of championships at the Isleworth Collegiate.

"What a tough, hard-fought finish from these guys," Tigers head coach Nick Clinard said. "We truly earned everything out there this week, and that's exactly the mentality we want to have with postseason quickly approaching."

The Tigers will return to The Plains for their lone home contest of the season, The Tiger Invitational. Auburn University Club will host the tournament March 11-12. Auburn will be represented by two teams of five as well as one individual competitor. The event is free and spectators are encouraged.

🔼 It’s All Honesty. Honesty Scott-Grayson was named to the All-SEC First Team for women's basketball—her first All-SEC nod.

Scott-Grayson has been one of the SEC's most prolific scorers, averaging 18.3 points per game to rank third in the league. In SEC play, she scored second overall, averaging 20.4 points per game in conference contests.

The Auburn graduate student has scored 20-plus points 10 times this season, including two games with 30 or more. She scored a career-high 32 points in a win over Mississippi State in the Tigers' home finale last week, and she matched her then-career high with 31 against No. 1 South Carolina. Scott-Grayson was named SEC Player of the Week and one of five USBWA National Players of the Week after her 21-point performance in Auburn's upset win over No. 4/7 LSU on Jan. 14.

Scott-Grayson and the Tigers begin postseason play Thursday in Greenville, South Carolina, as they face Arkansas in the second round of the SEC Tournament. Game time is 5 p.m. CT/6 p.m. ET at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

🔼 A Talented Trio. A seasoned high jumper in her final collegiate competition, a West Coast transplant triple jumper finding a new home on the Plains, and a school record-holder from Zimbabwe.

Three Auburn women: high jumper Sanaa Barnes, triple jumper Simone Johnson and 400m runner Vimbayi Maisvorewa will represent the Tigers this weekend at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston.

"I'm very blessed to be part of the Auburn family, and I am excited to represent it," Barnes, who is making her third and final appearance at NCAA indoors, said.

"I enjoy triple jump because of how technical the event is," said Johnson, who came to the Plains this year after three seasons at San Diego State and is making her second NCAA indoors appearance. "It embodies the way that track is a mental sport.”

Maisvorewa enters her first NCAA indoors after breaking the school record in the women's 400m (52.16) at SECs.

"I love 400 meters for so many reasons," she said. "It's more of a mind race because you have to plan your race to be able to execute the 400 meters."

🔼 Ace on a Roll. Accolades continue to roll in for Auburn softball phenom Maddie Penta as she earned National Pitcher of the Week honors from both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and D1 Softball on Tuesday.

For the second time in her career, Penta was selected as the Wilson/NFCA National Pitcher of the Week to go along with her selection from D1 Softball. Penta was also tabbed the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week for a program-record sixth time in her career on Monday.

Penta has fanned at least 10 batters in her last five appearances and recorded four straight shutouts. Eyeing history, Penta is just two wins shy of tying and three from breaking Kaylee Carlson's program record for career wins.

Penta and the No. 25 Tigers return to the diamond on Friday to open SEC play at No. 12 Missouri. The series begins Friday at 4 p.m. CT on the SEC Network+.

🔼 Hitting the Mat in Music City. The No. 14 Auburn gymnastics team will compete in Nashville on March 16, and the inaugural Kidney Care Women's Gymnastics Championships will be held at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium.

The Tigers will face off against SEC rival Kentucky, Ohio State and Fisk in the day's final session, beginning at 7:15 p.m. CT. The first session will feature Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Pittsburgh and Talladega.

Both sessions will be streamed live on YouTube.

Single-session tickets are on sale and may be purchased online through the Auditorium website or event website. Discounted group tickets will be available through the Auditorium by calling 615-862-6590.

🔼 What Did John Fox Say? Head diving coach John Fox sits down with Andy Burcham to discuss the upcoming Zone B Diving Championships and a recap of the season so far!

Fox and Co. head to Athens, Georgia, March 10-13 in hopes of punching a few tickets to this month's NCAA Championships.

🔼 In the Air Tonight. After moving some things around with the weather forecast this week, No. 13 Auburn (9-2) takes on Air Force (4-7) for the first time in program history today at 1 p.m. CT at Plainsman Park.

"The more you play, I think it keeps unveiling areas where you know you need to continue to grow if you want to be the best team you can be down the road," head coach Butch Thompson said.

"Whenever you get to host one of our academies and what these young men have signed up for, the discipline that's bred within their program is something to honor. This is a way for us to do that. I have high regards for Air Force coming in here," Thompson added.

The game will be broadcast on the Auburn Sports Network and can be heard locally on Wings 94.3 FM. The contest will also stream digitally on SEC Network+.
