Bodda Getta Daily Brew 8/23: Maka Mania Ensues

Auburn sprinter Makanakaishe Charamba reflects on his magical Paris Olympics experience

Good Morning, Auburn Family. Bearing the flag of his native Zimbabwe during the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics, Auburn sprinter Makanakaishe Charamba floated by boat down the River Seines to the Gardens of the Trocadero in France.

“Lifting my flag and waving it around on camera,” Charamba said. “Probably one of the best experiences of the Games.”

Charamba attended a meeting before the ceremonies that included USA flagbearers Lebron James and Coco Gauff.

“The dream is coming true now,” he said. “Walking around the Village and seeing people like Lebron James. It definitely made me feel like I belonged there, and I believe in the future, I’ll probably be up there.”

🔼 Swing and Their Miss. Auburn’s offense was too much to handle Thursday night at the Auburn Soccer Complex as the Tigers poured on the goal-scoring, downing Southern Miss in convincing fashion, 6-0. For those keeping track, Auburn Soccer has now outscored its first two opponents by a combined score of 10-0.

“Everything went well tonight. We were firing on all cylinders,” head coach Karen Hoppa said.

In the first of two Senior Weekend celebrations, the Tigers found a foursome of goals from three of their senior players, including a brace from Sydnie Thibodaux, the 90th in program history.

Next up, Auburn hosts Coastal Carolina for the final match of its Senior Weekend series. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. CT on Sunday, Aug. 25.

🔼 Setting the Stage. Four Auburn Tigers have been voted to the 2024 Preseason Coaches All-Southeastern Conference Football Team, including first-teamers Jarquez Hunter and Alex McPherson.

Hunter, the SEC’s leading returning rusher with 909 yards rushing last season, was named to the First Team offense at running back.

McPherson, who converted all 13 field goal attempts last season as a freshman, was named to the First Team special teams as a kickoff specialist and the Third Team as a placekicker.

Keionte Scott, who led the SEC in punt return average last season averaging 14.8 yards per return, was named to the Second Team as a return specialist.

Eugene Asante, Auburn’s leading tackler with 86 stops in 2023, was voted to the Third Team at linebacker.

🔼 Your Plains Plan. Thursday is done and dusted, but you don't miss any of the action this weekend on The Plains!

Auburn Volleyball gets underway with an exhibition game against Georgia Tech on Saturday, while Auburn Soccer keeps rolling along with a Senior Weekend game against Coastal Carolina.

Sports are back, baby. War Eagle!

🔼 Her Future Isn’t Up in the Air (Or Is It?!). A handful of Auburn equestrian members used the summer to gain valuable experiences not only in their area of study but also in life, whether they stayed in the United States or traveled abroad!

Sophomore Brooke Jolstad, an aviation management major, worked on getting her private pilot’s license and an internship with UBS.

Q: Where did you spend your summer, and what was your role?
A: “I spent the summer interning for UBS Financial, specifically with the sports and entertainment division and the Montage Group. My role there was to assist the financial advisors and work on projects to find a better organizational system.”
