Bodda Getta Daily Brew 2/6: K.D. and the Sunshine Band

Today, we take a look at senior guard K.D. Johnson and the success of his fellow non-starters

Good morning. Moments before tipoff at Neville Arena, a hype video plays, reaching maximum volume when one of the Tigers’ most popular players screams into the camera.

Just K.D. being K.D.

“They love it, so I’m just going to keep it going for them,” Auburn senior guard K.D. Johnson said. “At the end of the day, I’m just having fun.”

In his third season on the Plains, Johnson has endeared himself to Auburn basketball fans through his passion and productivity. In 22 games, he has made a team-leading 28 steals while committing only 17 turnovers.

Johnson comes off the bench to lead “K.D. and the Sunshine Band,” a nickname for himself and fellow Tiger non-starters Chad Baker-Mazara, Dylan Cardwell, Chaney Johnson, Aden Holloway and Lior Berman.

Read the feature on Johnson for more on being tasked with defending opponents’ premier guards, his relationship with Coach Bruce Pearl and “the Auburn love.”

Auburn stays home this week, hosting rival and No. 7 Alabama in Neville Arena. The teams will face off at 8 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.

🔼 Broome’s Bounty. For the first time in his career, Auburn junior center/forward Johni Broome garnered SEC Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors.

The preseason All-SEC First Team and John R. Wooden National Player of the Year Award candidate averaged 15.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.0 blocks, leading the Tigers to another 2-0 week in conference play with wins over Vanderbilt and Ole Miss.

He recorded his 55th career double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots versus the Commodores on Jan. 31 at Neville Arena. Broome followed that performance up with 15 points, nine rebounds, a career-high seven assists and three blocks to hand the Rebels their first home loss of the season on Feb. 3 in Oxford, Miss.

Broome is on a 13-game double-digit scoring streak, which includes five double-double performances during that stretch. He currently ranks second among active NCAA Division I career leaders in blocks (315) and fifth in double-doubles (55).

🔼 The Winds of Change. No. 17 Auburn moved up two spots on the team leaderboard during the second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on Monday. The Tigers recorded a second-round score of 287 (-1), and their 36-hole total of 579 (+3) places them in fifth place on the team leaderboard. The team is seven shots behind tournament leader LSU.

"Today the wind was much stronger, which made it challenging to get it close to the hole," said Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen. "Our biggest challenge is the slow speed of the greens. In Auburn, we are spoiled by our fantastic greens superintendents who have the greens rolling true and very fast. Tomorrow's focus is to get the ball past the hole; just too many putts left short. We do that, we will have an opportunity to go low and climb the leaderboard."

This morning’s final round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic has an early start, with a 5:30 a.m. CT shotgun start. Auburn team participants will be paired with players from Arkansas and Georgia Southern on hole No. 4 through hole No. 6. Live scoring of the third round will be available online at Golfstat.com and the GolfStat mobile app.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Georgia

After making the All-SEC Freshman Team at Georgia in 2020-21, Johnson transferred to Auburn, helping the Tigers win the 2022 SEC championship in his first season.

“I’ve known him for quite a while,” Johnson said of Coach Pearl. “He was one of my first high-major Division I offers. When I got here, it was everything I wanted it to be, plus more. I love it here.”
