Bodda Getta Daily Brew 2/19: It's in the Auburn Genes

Son of former Auburn coach Matt Myers, Carson struck out 8 batters for a sweep of E. Kentucky

Good morning. On the strength of a combined 14 strikeouts from Carson Myers and Christian Herberholz, No. 15 Auburn completed its sweep of Eastern Kentucky with a 9-1 win Sunday afternoon at Plainsman Park.

Making his Auburn debut, Myers (1-0, 0.00), who is the son of former Auburn assistant coach Matt Myers, earned his first win and struck out a career-high eight batters in 6.0 scoreless innings.

"He's earned this right, and he absolutely continued to pitch the way he's been pitching recently," head coach Butch Thompson said. "To track with a family for that long and to be that good of friends and then to see a day like today, that's a surreal moment and a neat one for that family."

The Tigers take on UAB (2-1) Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Plainsman Park before heading to Jacksonville, Florida for the Jax College Baseball Classic next weekend.

🔼 A Quarter For Your Thoughts. Auburn took a 10-point lead to the fourth quarter but could not hold on as Alabama rallied for a 67-61 win Sunday afternoon at Coleman Coliseum.

"We played hard, and that got us in the game and kept us in the game," Auburn head coach Johnnie Harris said. "But undisciplined mistakes cost us. We've got to be better. I need to be better, and they need to be better.

Honesty Scott-Grayson led Auburn for the 11th straight game, scoring 15 points along with five rebounds. JaMya Mingo-Young added 14 points and a game-high six assists against her former team. And Taylen Collins led the Tigers with seven rebounds.

Auburn (16-9, 5-7 SEC) is on the road for the fourth time in five games Thursday night with a late tip in Baton Rouge against No. 13/11 LSU. Game time is 8 p.m. CT at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

🔼 Fault-Free. Auburn claimed two home shutout wins on Sunday against Middle Tennessee State and The Citadel at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The Tigers defeated MTSU 4-0 in the first match of the day, then took down The Citadel 7-0 in the nightcap.

"We needed to make some changes with some of our doubles pairings, and I think they came out strong in the first 15 minutes, and that is the key to the doubles point," said Auburn head coach Bobby Reynolds. "I think that carried over into the singles."

"The reason we play the doubleheader is because next week, when we go into Blue-Gray, we'll have a full match in the morning, doubles in the afternoon, followed by singles and a full match the next day," Reynolds continued. "So you have to be ready to go compete from the beginning. I don't think we did the best of that in the doubles against The Citadel, but we turned it around in the singles."

Auburn will return to Montgomery to defend its title at the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic, which will be held Feb. 23 and 24.

🔼 Testing the Waters. For the eighth time in program history, Auburn will play host to both the Men's and Women's SEC Swimming and Diving Championships, Feb. 19-24.

Action inside James E. Martin Aquatic Center begins on Monday, Feb. 19, with Men's 1-meter diving. Fans unable to make it to the Plains can follow the action on Meet Mobile. Each session will also be streamed live on SEC Network Plus.

Head coach Ryan Wochomurka brings his men's and women's squad into this year's meet, each with a top 15 ranking. The men sit at No. 10, according to the latest CSCAA Coaches Poll, while the women carry a No. 15 ranking.

Entering SECs, Auburn women account for eight swims that rank in the top 25 in the nation. Senior Meghan Lee owns three of such swims. Her 200 back, 100 fly and 200 fly times are all amongst Division I's best.

On the men's side, the tag team of brothers Nate Stoffle and Aidan Stoffle have dominated the backstroke events throughout 2023-24.

Auburn will stay on the Plains for one last competition, hosting the Last Chance Meet March 1-2. It will be the Tigers' final opportunity to gain ground on qualifying times before the National Championships later in the month.

🔼 No Horsin’ Around at Home. The No. 6 Auburn equestrian team put on a dominating performance Saturday afternoon, defeating No. 8 UT Martin 14-6 at the Auburn University Equestrian Center.

"It was a great win today and we appreciate the Auburn fans for coming out even though it was cold and windy," head coach Jessica Braswell said. "We won all four events, which was huge for us. It was an overall great effort from the entire team and we're looking forward to continuing this momentum the rest of the season."

Auburn takes a couple of weeks off before returning to the Auburn University Equestrian Center on March 2. The Tigers will take on the SMU Mustangs at 11 a.m. CT, and admission is free.

🔼 Softball Saturday. Due to unfavorable field conditions at Nancy Alamrez Stadium following overnight rain, No. 25 Auburn softball's contest versus No. 8 Clemson was canceled on Saturday.

Auburn concluded the PV College Challenge with a 3-0 record and improved to 4-1-1 overall.

The Tigers return to Jane B. Moore Field next weekend to host the Plainsman Invitational on Feb. 23-25. Auburn is set to face Longwood, Southeast Missouri State and Northern Iowa over six games.

🔼 A Dickensian Conclusion. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” for Auburn Gymnastics. The No. 12 Auburn gymnastics team finished with a 197.100 on the road, earning a season-best road score as No.3 LSU won the meet with a 198.300 Friday night in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

"I thought the team fought well tonight in this environment," head coach Jeff Graba said. "We still struggled to start out slow, but we picked it up at the end with our two best events, and I'm happy with that. We need to really find our groove being on the road because we're away from home all of March, and this was a good start for us."

Auburn returns to the Plains for one last meet in Neville Arena in 2024. The Tigers will host nationally-ranked Missouri on February 23 at 6 p.m. CT and the meet will be televised on SEC Network.

🔼 Streak-Killing Kentucky Strikes Again. Johni Broome recorded his tenth double-double, but No. 13 Auburn never led, falling 70-59 to No. 22 Kentucky Saturday at Neville Arena, ending the Tigers' 16-game home winning streak.

"Kentucky can guard and they can turn it up when they want to. They outplayed us," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. "We held them to 70; they averaged 90. While I'm disappointed in the outcome, when you get outplayed, when somebody plays better than you, my hat's off to them."

Broome scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Chad Baker-Mazara scored 14 points and went 9-for-9 from the free-throw line.  Denver Jones added 12 points.

With no midweek game, Auburn (20-6, 9-4) will have extra time to rest and prepare to play at Georgia next Saturday at 5 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

Interestingly enough, Auburn Senior Writer Jeff Shearer sat down with Auburn legend Rex Frederick this week as he recalled the 30-game winning streak from his day that was also snapped by Kentucky in a 1959 game.

🐅 ONE BIG THING

Can’t Stop This. Although baseball season is officially underway, we’d be remiss not to report on the fact that junior right-handed pitcher Will Cannon was named to the preseason watch list for the 19th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award.

Cannon, who was named to the midseason watch list in 2023, is one of 12 relievers from the Southeastern Conference named—the most of any conference.

The Phenix City native posted a 3-2 record with a 4.41 ERA and led the team with five saves in his first year on The Plains. His five saves were tied for fifth most in the league, and his 15 games finished were tied for fourth.

Last year, Cannon struck out 44 batters in 49.0 innings. He went 2-0 with a 4.25 ERA and earned a pair of saves in SEC play.
