Bodda Getta Daily Brew 7/8: Horace Made History

Horace Spencer puts pro basketball on hold, returning to Auburn to get his degree

Good Morning, Auburn Family. In the five years since he helped Auburn advance to the Final Four, Horace Spencer has put his passport to good use, playing professionally in Argentina, Turkey, France and Finland.

Knee surgery last season allowed Horace to return to Auburn University to complete his degree and graduate on Aug. 3

A consensus top 100 recruit, the 6-8 Spencer played four seasons for Auburn from 2015-19, concluding his career with a pair of SEC titles and a magical NCAA Tournament run. Becoming the first team from the state of Alabama to reach the Final Four, Auburn defeated Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky in an eight-day span in March 2019.

🔼 DeWanna Do It Again? Connecticut Sun guard-forward and former Auburn great DeWanna Bonner was named a WNBA All-Star for the sixth time.

In her 15th WNBA season, Bonner is averaging a team-best 16.2 points per game, with 6.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.4 steals for the Sun. She has led Connecticut in scoring in 15 of 19 games, including six games with 20-plus points. Earlier this season, she moved into fifth all-time in scoring in WNBA history and topped the 7,000-point career mark on May 28.

Bonner and the Team WNBA All-Stars will take on the USA Basketball Women’s National Team in the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game. Go here for the details.

🔼 Haley’s Comet. In her career with Auburn soccer, senior Haley Duca has learned the most important way to serve the team is by “embracing your role.”

After not seeing any time in the fall of her freshman year, Duca took on a new position (outside back) and saw a lot of playing time in the spring.

In her second year, she played a career-high 27 minutes during the Tigers’ exhilarating 9-0 victory against Southern Miss. After her record game, Duca moved back to the bench.

“Sophomore year, it switched back to not playing,” Duca said. “But it was just about understanding that this is what is best for the team and that you can’t be selfish.”

In her junior year, Duca accumulated more minutes and scored her first career goal as a Tiger. The magic moment came as the game-winner against Tennessee in the SEC Tournament.

Duca says the goal was “everything."

Read “On the Plains With Haley Duca” for more on the senior’s final season.

🔼 Meanwhile, on the Emerald Isle. Members of Auburn’s men’s and women’s golf teams helped Team USA come out on top in the Arnold Palmer Cup. Congratulations Anna, Jackson and Brendan! 👇🏼
