Bodda Getta Daily Brew 12/11: Hoosier Daddy

The Tigers hammer the Hoosiers 104-76 in Holiday Hoopsgiving.

Good morning. Auburn made a season-high 14 3-pointers, tied the program record with only three turnovers and finished the first half with a nearly flawless stretch to beat Indiana 104-76 Saturday in Holiday Hoopsgiving at State Farm Arena.

"A great victory over a historic program," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. "We played really well. I don't know that we can play much better. We shot it well, defended well, took care of the basketball and each player played to the level of their ability at a high end.

🔼 Holiday Hoops—The Gift That Kept On Giving. "That was beautiful basketball," Coach Bruce Pearl said of the win over Indiana. "That's a big win for our league. That's our best win of the year so far."

Aden Holloway connected on 5 of 8 3-pointers and scored a career-high 24 points, and Jaylin Williams tied his career-high with 24 to pace six Tigers in double figures. K.D. Johnson scored 14 points, Denver Jones added 12, Chad Baker-Mazara scored 11 and Tre Donaldson scored 10.

The Tigers produced a sensational 25-3 assist-to-turnover ratio, committing their last one while holding the ball in the final seconds.

Auburn connected on 14 of 29 3-pointers, a 48.3-percent clip, while making 20 of 23 free throws and outrebounding the Hoosiers 39-35. Dylan Cardwell led Auburn with eight rebounds, while Johni Broome and Donaldson each grabbed seven.

Playing in his hometown, K.D. Johnson made highlight-reel reverse layups deserving of an NBA venue and gave Auburn its first lead with a pair of free throws.

"They physically took us out of everything we wanted to do," Indiana coach Mike Woodson said. "You've got to give them credit."

Auburn (6-2) heads to Huntsville, Alabama, to play UNC Asheville on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT in the Rocket City Classic at Von Braun Center.

🔼 Little Rock, Big Win. Auburn put together a strong defensive effort and held off a late Little Rock run to earn a 58-45 win on the road Sunday afternoon at the Jack Stephens Center.

The Tigers (7-2) used a big second quarter to build a 16-point halftime lead, then overcame a foul-heavy fourth quarter to hold on for their third road victory of the season and fourth straight win overall.

"My message to the team going into the fourth quarter was that they (Little Rock) are not going to quit," Auburn head coach Johnnie Harris said. "They started driving, getting some fouls, but we hung in there and hung tough. We started not finishing our shots, but down the stretch, I put the ball in Honesty's hands, and she came through."

More than 100 supporters of Harris and freshman Savannah Scott – both Arkansas natives – filled the corner of the arena near the Tigers' bench as the two made their return to their home state.

Auburn returns home for its next five games, beginning with a visit from I-85 rival Alabama State on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Game time is 7 p.m. CT at Neville Arena.

🔼 The Storybook Season. Ten years ago on Thursday, Auburn rushed for 545 yards and scored 59 points to beat Missouri and win the SEC Championship. It was the program’s eighth conference title since joining the SEC in 1933. It was also the culmination of what was one of the most historic seasons on the Plains.

No Auburn fan or college football fan in general will forget the 2013 Auburn team.

For most people, that season will be remembered for two of the most iconic plays in college football history – the Prayer at Jordan Hare and the Kick Six.

“It was two crazy weeks,” former Auburn offensive lineman Chad Slade said. “We didn’t expect it. We just tried to come out here and play a game, and both of those ended up happening. We loved every bit of it.”

But if you ask Slade or any other member of that 2013 team, that team shouldn’t just be remembered for those two miracle plays against their two biggest rivals. They should be remembered for the way they overcame adversity and for how they found a way to win every single week.

“Just resiliency,” said Reese Dismukes, a team captain in 2013. “Coming back from going 3-9 the previous year and the ability for us to really compartmentalize that, put it behind us, come in with a new team, work hard and fight to win each and every game and get better. The commitment between the guys that it took and the effort. It was not easy, but we were able to do it.”

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Nick Marshall

With less than a minute remaining, Auburn faced 4th-and-18 from its own 27-yard line. If the Tigers didn’t convert, the game was over. Marshall took the snap, scanned the field, stepped up and threw a heave in the direction of Louis, who was streaking down the field.

When the two defenders collided, causing the ball to bounce back up into the air, Louis was right there to grab the deflection as he raced into the end zone for the game-winning score.

🐅 Have a great Monday, y’all!
