Bodda Getta Daily Brew 10/31: Gunning For Greatness

Today, we're in awe of Gunner Britton's second time as O-Lineman of the Week.

Good morning. Just as impressive as Auburn's Gunner Britton being named Southeastern Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week for the second time is fellow O-lineman Connor Lew earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors.

In Auburn's 27-13 win over Mississippi on State Saturday, Britton and Lew helped the Tigers total 416 yards of offense, including 186 yards rushing on 36 attempts, an average of 5.2 yards per carry.

🔼 Pitcher Perfect. How do you accomplish something that’s never been done before? You dig deep within yourself and forge your own path. It’s not easy, but it seems that way for Auburn softball’s senior ace Maddie Penta as she continues to shatter records and leave her mark on the sport.

Penta turned in one of the most prolific pitching performances in school history during her junior campaign, helping Auburn to its most overall wins and its highest Southeastern Conference finish since the 2017 season. Among her many highlights during the 2023 season, she became just the second player in program history to record 300 strikeouts in a season, tied the record for wins in a season, and posted the lowest earned run average ever by a Tiger in SEC play. Her efforts were rewarded with Auburn’s first SEC Pitcher of the Year selection. The icing on the cake, Penta became the only pitcher in program history to earn first-team All-America honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

“Ever since I was little, I dreamed about being an All-American,” she said of the accomplishment. “It brought me a great sense of pride.”

🔼  No Volunteers. Auburn soccer battled back from a 1-0 deficit to edge out Tennessee 2-1 Sunday night at the Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex and advance to the second round of the 2023 SEC Tournament in Pensacola, Florida. Auburn found its goals from a pair of first-time scorers in the Orange & Blue, Becky Contreras and Haley Duca. It was technically the ninth goal of Contreras' career, but her first as a Tiger after transferring from Kennesaw State prior to the start of the season.

"I'm so proud of the way we responded and the way we grew into that game," Tigers head coach Karen Hoppa said. "We gave up an early goal, but we didn't get down about it. I always tell them that this is a game of mistakes. They happen. What matters is what you do after them, and boy, did we put up a response. We're glad to be here and to keep working toward securing our postseason."

The challenges continue as top-seeded Arkansas awaits Auburn in the following round. That match kicks off today at 5 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.

🔼 Access Denied ✖️. The Auburn defense was critical in Saturday’s win against Mississippi State, with the message being, “Not in this end zone.” Preventing them from converting 10 times on 12 third downs, Auburn's defense limited the Bulldogs to just one touchdown Saturday in the Tigers' 27-13 victory.

"I'm so grateful to (defensive coordinator) Coach (Ron) Roberts and all he does to prepare us," said Eugene Asante, who led Auburn with nine tackles.

"We had many three-and-outs regarding crucial moments and points of the game," said Cam Riley, who added four tackles, a quarterback hurry, and a pass breakup. "It was beneficial for the defense to get those stops toward the end of the game and get our offense on the field to seal the deal."

"We had the mindset of, if teams don't score on us, teams don't beat us," said Keionte Scott, who contributed seven tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup.

"They did a good job of keeping them out of the end zone. They bowed up most every time," Auburn coach Hugh Freeze said. "For our lack of depth, they've done a marvelous job, the staff and kids."

🤔 TIGER TRIVIA

That’s The Goal. With the Auburn Tigers advancing to the second round of the SEC tournament over the Lady Vols, today’s trivia involves something quite interesting that happened during that game.

For obvious reasons, an assist by a goalkeeper is fairly rare, and yet Maddie Prohaska did just that in the game on Sunday.

Today’s question: When was the last time an Auburn goalkeeper earned an assist before Prohaska achieved that?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 2014!

This is how it went down. Senior Anna Haddock initiated Auburn's game-tying play, passing back to Maddie Prohaska when under pressure. Prohaska played a long ball that took one bounce three yards from the edge of the goal zone and found Becky Contreras making a run on the left post. Contreras opted for the header and powered the ball just out of the reach of the Tennessee keeper to tuck it inside the near post.

Prohaska became the first Auburn goalkeeper to earn an assist since Alyse Scott versus Memphis in 2014, and it was the first of her tenure.

"I saw her [Prohaska] ball going further than her normal balls do, and I knew I had to turn it on and run for it," Contreras said. "I made the decision to head it, and it worked out for us. It was truly a special moment for me to come up big for my team and get my first goal here at Auburn."

🐅 Have a great Tuesday, y’all!
