🔼 Serving Clemson a Donut. Auburn Soccer kickstarted the 2024 season with a statement win over No. 5 Clemson, taking down the Tigers 4-0 Thursday night at the Auburn Soccer Complex, marking the largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent in program history.
“I saw a team putting the pieces together,” Tigers head coach Karen Hoppa said. “Boy, they really played together and stuck to the game plan. We scored some great goals and defended our tails off.”
The win was Auburn’s first over a top-five opponent since toppling No. 5 Duke 1-0 in 2011.
Next, Auburn stays home to host Southern Miss on Thursday, Aug. 22, at 6:30 p.m. CT. The match kicks off Senior Weekend on The Plains.
🔼 Payton’s Golden Arm. Auburn’s Payton Thorne has been selected as a candidate for the 2024 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented annually to college football’s top senior quarterback.
One of 63 quarterbacks on the preseason watch list, the 6-2 203-pounder passed for 1,755 yards with 16 touchdowns in 2023 in his first season on the Plains. Thorne added 425 yards rushing, the 10th most by an Auburn quarterback.
Johnny Unitas was an 18-year veteran of the NFL who played his collegiate career at the University of Louisville before joining the Baltimore Colts in 1958. His career passing figures include 2,830 pass completions for 40,239 yards, 290 touchdowns and throwing a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games.
🔼 MATriculators. Fifteen members of the Auburn gymnastics team were named to the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Scholastic All-America team for the 2023-24 school year, the organization announced Wednesday.
The 15 honors are the most under head coach Jeff Graba after the squad earned 12 following the 2019-20 season. They are also tied for the most in the Southeastern Conference.
