Bodda Getta Daily Brew 1/16: Coach and Carter

MBB coach Bruce Pearl surprises senior Carter Sobera with a scholarship after the LSU win

Good morning. "Auburn is connected, and people actually want to see you succeed," Auburn senior and member of the men’s basketball team Carter Sobera said during his recent “On the Plains” feature. "Being my last season, I want to take it in for the last time."

As a walk-on, Sobera was hopeful for playing time during his career. He's gotten that opportunity here and there, including against Alabama in 2022 when he scored the 100th point for Auburn at the free-throw line. When shooting the free throw, he had no clue he was in that position, but to this day, it remains his favorite memory.

In a moment that will surely cause even the most stoic of fans to choke up, MBB head coach Bruce Pearl surprised Sobera by awarding him a scholarship in the locker room following Auburn's win over LSU. Watch the moving footage on WarEagle+. Not a member yet? Sign up here!

The remarkable DeWanna Bonner is featured in this Talking Tigers Podcast, brought to you by Alabama Public Health.

🔼 Perfection Not Pending. Auburn men’s tennis started the spring portion of its schedule perfect on Sunday, picking up two 7-0 wins over Samford and Alabama State during a doubleheader at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The first dual match of the season was played indoors due to cold weather, while the second match was able to be played outdoors.

"I think the biggest part of these first couple of matches is getting our feet wet with getting out there, running around, and getting the cobwebs off," Auburn head coach Bobby Reynolds said after the two victories. "I thought we did a really good job with that, along with playing inside and outside, which is a tough transition."

Up next, Auburn will host another doubleheader against Tulane and Alabama A&M on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The first match with Tulane is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT, and the second is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT.

Favorite Auburn tradition? Rolling Toomer's Corner after a football win.
When did you start riding? First pony? "I started riding when I was 8 years old, and my first pony's name was Beaufort."
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what teammate would you want to be stuck with you and why? “I would want to be stuck with my roommate, Brooke Jolstad, because I think she would be very resourceful and find a way to escape."
Best advice? "The best advice I have received was from Coach Williams when he told me to 'never let anyone outwork me.'"

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: a) 7,720!

"We knew we had to go out there and put on a show," Honesty Scott-Grayson said of the huge crowd. "To see all of those people was a sight to see. It was good for us. I've been waiting for this moment, and it came, so I'm embracing it."

"When we were making a run, it was so loud in here, and you could tell that these people were behind us," Coach Johnnie Harris said. "This was our family weekend, and that's what family is all about, getting behind them. For them to see that, feel that and feed off that was an amazing experience."

🐅 Have a great Tuesday, y’all
