Bodda Getta Daily Brew 3/11: Bye Bye

Men's hoops beat Georgia to secure a double-bye at the SEC Tournament

Good morning. Denver Jones made seven 3-pointers, and No. 13 Auburn recorded assists on nearly 90 percent of its baskets Saturday in the Tigers' 92-78 victory over Georgia on Senior Night to sweep the season series and secure a double-bye at next week's SEC Tournament.

"To win 13 games in the league this year is really something," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. "This league was daunting."

Auburn (24-7, 13-5) is the No. 4 seed in the SEC Tournament and will travel to Nashville for the quarterfinals, facing either South Carolina, Arkansas, or Vanderbilt.

🔼 A King’s Ransom. When Hugh Freeze told Vontrell King-Williams he was promoting him as the new defensive tackles coach at Auburn, the former college defensive lineman was moved to tears.

“I cried like a baby,” he said. “Just because I understand the rareness of this opportunity. And how it all happened, I couldn’t believe it. Still now, to this day, I don’t believe it. I feel the same. It hasn’t hit me yet.”

Read the feature on King-Williams for more on how he got into coaching, raising his younger brother and his love of recruiting and mentoring players.

🔼 Rejoicing in the Red Stick City. The No. 14 Auburn gymnastics team scored a 197.050 to finish second at the 2024 Podium Challenge Friday night in Baton Rouge. The final meet of the regular season will have Auburn in Nashville at the inaugural Kidney Care Women's Gymnastics Championship. The Tigers will take on Kentucky, Ohio State and Fisk on March 16 at 7:15 p.m. CT.

"I think the team did really well considering some of the circumstances this week," head coach Jeff Graba said. "We've battled sickness and injury this week and put quite a few new people into lineups. Breaking a 197 on the road after all that is really good for this team."

🔼 Aggiesravation. The No. 6 Auburn equestrian team closed out the 2023-24 regular season with a big win at home, downing No. 2 Texas A&M on Saturday, 13-5. Auburn (7-5, 3-3 SEC) took three of four possible Most Outstanding Performer honors. Senior Kate Buchanan took the award in Reining, while junior Mary-Grace Segars was named MOP in Flat. Sophomore Alexia Tordoff secured MOP honors for her win in Horsemanship.

"This team never quits," head coach Jessica Braswell said. "They kept pushing through even after a tough loss last weekend. This was a big win against a really great team that we will probably see more of in the postseason."

🔼 The Game Within the Game. No. 13 Auburn turned in season highs in runs and hits and scored in every inning in a 24-5 run-rule victory to win the series against Austin Peay Sunday afternoon at Plainsman Park. After suffering its worst loss of the season Saturday, Auburn's 24 runs and 19-run margin of victory was the most and largest since defeating Alabama A&M 33-0 on Feb. 24, 2021. It marked the first time Auburn scored in every inning in a game since 2014.

"Just up and down the lineup, we kept churning it out," head coach Butch Thompson said. "This is all about around home plate and inside those lines and your ability to win some of those wars. There's a game within a game; that's what's so amazing about baseball."

🔼 Sullying the Competition’s Chances. Delivering back-to-back stellar lists on day one of the Zone B Championships, senior Ashlynn Sullivan finished 10th (534.20) in the 1-meter to qualify for her first NCAA Championships later this month. Today is the men's 1-meter competition and the women's 3-meter competition. The men are competing for seven spots while the women will be vying for eight.

"I felt nothing but peace and relief under Coach [John] Fox, knowing all the hard work was eventually going to show," Sullivan said of her performance. "Staying at Auburn and making NCAAs as a 5th-year was the cherry on top of my career and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way."

🔼 Penta Puts a Pin in the Sweep. Behind a historic performance from Maddie Penta—who kept the Missouri offense in check with her sixth shutout of the season—and a pair of insurance home runs from Amelia Lech, No. 25 Auburn softball (13-4-1, 1-2 SEC) spoiled the sweep with a 4-0 win over No. 12 Missouri (20-3, 2-1 SEC) Sunday at the Mizzou Softball Complex.

"We did a nice job of making adjustments at the plate," said head coach Mickey Dean. "Our defense played sharp. Maddie hit her spots. We had a game plan that everyone was able to stick with. It ended up being a great day."

🔼 The Ball Was in Their Court. No. 35 Men's tennis defeated 48th-ranked Georgia by a close 4-3 score in Athens on Sunday. The win marks the fifth time the Tigers have defeated the Bulldogs in program history and the first since the 2010 SEC Tournament quarterfinal round. Sunday's win is also Auburn's first win over Georgia in Athens since 1994.

"It was a great team win today," said Auburn head coach Bobby Reynolds. "I couldn't be happier for these guys because it's been a long time since we won in Athens, and it shows the growth of this team. To come out and change the narrative from our match against Tennessee is what we asked of them as coaches.”

🔼 A Razorback Rout. No. 12 Auburn shut out Arkansas for its fifth consecutive victory Sunday afternoon at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The Tigers remain perfect in the SEC this season at 4-0 and in home matches at 6-0.

"I was really impressed with the tennis today," Auburn interim head coach Lester Cook said after the match. "Arkansas is a good team, and they've had some good wins. Everything we've been working on is starting to click, and it showed today because they played great. The momentum is on our side right now, and as we head into more SEC play, this is exciting."

🔼 Rolling With It. No. 12 Women's Golf concluded a two-day event at the Valspar Invitational at the Forest Hills Golf Club on Sunday in Augusta, Georgia. The Tigers finished fourth in the event with a 54-hole total of 865 (+1). The tournament marks the team's sixth top-5 finish of the season.

"Proud of our seniors this week as Megan [Schofill] and Anna [Foster] both showed their maturity in difficult conditions today," said Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen. "This was our first time playing in the Valspar. Apparently, they had amazing greens and unfortunately got a disease so the surfaces were pretty rough. I hope they get them back because the course is a really cool Donald Ross layout."
