Bodda Getta Daily Brew 9/30: Auburn Hands Ole Miss a Donut

In its 10th clean sheet of the season, Auburn Soccer took down Ole Miss 3-0 on Sunday

Good Morning, Tigers. Thanks to its 10th clean sheet of the season and three second-half goals, No. 8 Auburn soccer picked up three more points in a 3-0 win over Ole Miss Sunday afternoon at the Auburn Soccer Complex.

Senior goalkeeper Maddie Prohaska smashed Auburn’s shutout record with the 34th of her career in the contest. She now stands alone at second in Southeastern Conference history.

With seven points through their first four matches, the Tigers (10-1-1, 2-1-1) posted their best start to SEC play since the 2020 season, when they opened with two wins and two ties for eight points.

🔼 Perfection Not Pending. Fueled by a record 3,082 fans in attendance at Neville Arena, Auburn (12-1, 2-0) outlasted rival Alabama (8-5, 0-2) to complete a perfect weekend of volleyball, 3-1 (25-19, 15-25, 29-27, 25-22).

Defense was the name of the game in the opening set for the Tigers. While Bella Bell picked up where she left off from Friday evening with three early kills, it was Madison Scheer, Bel Zimmerman, Chelsey McCurdy and Grace Havlicek who all notched a pair of blocks to keep the Crimson Tide at bay.

Get the full rundown, including comments from Coach Brent Crouch.

🔼 What a Rush. Jarquez Hunter wasted no time introducing himself to Auburn fans, rushing for more than 100 yards in his first two games as a true freshman in 2021 while producing the longest run in program history, a 94-yard touchdown burst against Alabama State.

“That’s my favorite run,” said Hunter, three years later.

Back home in Mississippi over the summer, family members informed Jarquez what it would take to join Auburn luminaries such as Ronnie Brown, Tre Mason, Joe Cribbs, James Brooks, former teammate Tank Bigsby and Carnell Williams in the top 10.

“I saw where it was Bo Jackson, Cadillac, and some other great running backs who came through here,” Hunter said. “It would be so exciting if I can get into the top five or top 10 range.”

🔼 Going to See a Horse About a Win. The No. 5 Auburn equestrian team kicked off the 2024-25 season with a huge win, downing No. 1 TCU Friday afternoon, 11-7, at the Auburn University Equestrian Center.

The Tigers took three of four Most Outstanding Performer honors on the day, including both in Western. Juniors Caroline Buchanan and Caroline Fredenburg won MOP in Reining and Horsemanship, respectively, while sophomore Avery Glynn earned MOP in Flat.

The Tigers take a couple of weeks off before hitting the road for the first time this season. On October 11, they will travel to Blythewood, South Carolina, to face the Gamecocks in a Southeastern Conference match-up.

🔼 On to Georgia. Auburn built a double-digit lead early in the fourth quarter, but No. 21 Oklahoma rallied with 17 straight points to defeat the Tigers 27-21 Saturday at sold-out Jordan-Hare Stadium.

"I have to help our team get over the edge when you have a chance to win a game like that," Freeze said. "I am proud of those young kids. I thought they played really well and they are starting to mature some. But gosh, this one stings for sure.”

After opening the season with five consecutive home games, Auburn (2-3, 0-2) visits No. 2 Georgia next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC and the Auburn Sports Network.
