Bodda Getta Daily Brew 8/5: Go For Gridiron
The unofficial start to football season—fall camp—has kicked off
Good Morning, Auburn Family. A new football season is officially underway on the Plains as Auburn kicked off fall camp Thursday. In less than a month, the Tigers will return to Jordan-Hare Stadium for Kickoff on The Plains.
“It’s our second fall camp,” head coach Hugh Freeze said. “I like the work that’s been put in this summer with our strength staff and our players and the changes in the culture and chemistry that I’ve seen. We’re excited to get practice one going.”
Go here for more, including what Coach Freeze said in his most recent press conference.

🔼 Back in Bronze. Auburn’s Sunisa Lee added to her medal count Sunday afternoon in Paris, repeating as the bronze medalist on the uneven bars.
Lee, the bronze medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the event, earned her third medal of the 2024 Paris Olympics and her sixth overall between the two games. With that total, she is second among all Auburn Olympic athletes.
Needing to beat a 14.733 from reigning Olympic bars champion Nina Derwael of Belgium, Lee put together a clean set with a small step on her dismount to secure a 14.866 for third. That score tied for her highest on the week with her qualification score (July 28) and the individual all-around final bars score (August 1).
Lee’s final Olympic Games event will be beam, which will be held this morning at 5:36 a.m. CT.
🔼 Burns, Baby, Burns. After a rough pitching outing earlier this season, Tanner Burns called his dad back home in Decatur, Alabama, for some fatherly wisdom. Like his son, Mike Burns played minor league baseball.
“’You’re one phone call away,’” Tanner recalls his dad telling him.
“That really hasn’t hit me because I’m usually thinking, ‘What do I have to do today to get better?’ But I really am one phone call away from fulfilling my childhood dream.”
Burns is in his fourth professional season, playing for the Columbus Clippers, Cleveland’s top minor league affiliate.
Go here for more on Burns, including his switch to full-time reliever, how Auburn prepared him for the pros and his advice for those just entering the Auburn Baseball program.

🔼 Ain’t That a Kick in the Pants. Auburn senior punter Oscar Chapman has been named to the Ray Guy Award preseason watch list, one of 34 recognized for the potential to be college football’s best punter in 2024.
Entering his fifth season as Auburn’s starting punter, Chapman was a Ray Guy Award semifinalist in 2022. That year, he ranked fourth in the SEC, averaging 43.9 yards on 57 punts.
The winner must display team leadership and self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success. Go here for more, including the statistics used to calculate the recipient.

🔼 Pomp and Circumstance on The Plains. Twenty-four current and former Auburn student-athletes participated in Auburn University’s 2024 Summer Commencement ceremonies this weekend in Neville Arena.
Thirteen teams were represented over the course of the university’s three ceremonies.

🔼 Fab Frosh Football. After a perfect freshman season on the Plains, Auburn sophomore Alex McPherson is one of 30 players on the preseason watch list for the 2024 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award. The award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou “The Toe” Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns and advocated that there be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
McPherson did not miss a kick for Auburn in 2023, going 13-for-13 on field goals and 40-for-40 on extra points.
He seeks to rebound from an offseason illness that prevented him from working out over the summer.
“Getting better, thankfully,” Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said Thursday before the Tigers’ first preseason practice. “Not clear to participate just yet, but he's with us here.”
