Bodda Getta Daily Brew 12/5: Deep Freeze on The Plains

Most of Alabama's highest-rated players signed with Auburn at the start of the early signing period, giving Hugh Freeze his second full recruiting class.

Good Morning, Auburn Family. The stars of the Class of ’25 decided they look good in orange and blue. Most of the state’s highest-rated players signed with Auburn Wednesday at the start of the early signing period, giving Auburn coach Hugh Freeze’s second full recruiting class a home-state boost.

“To be consistent in winning nine and 10 games in this league, you have to have a roster that’s made up of some top 10 recruiting classes,” Coach Freeze said. “We’re two for two in that after today.”

🔼 Big Shoes Fill Big Shoes. Former Auburn associate head coach and current Mississippi State head coach James Armstrong has been named Auburn head soccer coach, Athletic Director John Cohen has announced. Armstrong, who was on staff at Auburn from 2013-18, returns to the Plains after taking Mississippi State to unprecedented heights since becoming head coach in 2019.

Armstrong led the Bulldog soccer program to its first SEC regular-season championship this season with a perfect 10-0-0 conference record, becoming only the fourth team in league history to accomplish the feat. The winningest coach in program history, Armstrong guided Mississippi State to a 19-3-0 overall record in 2024, marking the highest win total in school history. For his efforts, Armstrong was named the 2024 SEC Coach of the Year.

🔼 Make Room For Broome. For the second time in his career, senior All-American and National Player of the Year candidate Johni Broome was honored as one of five U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Oscar Robertson National Players of the Week.

For the 2024-25 season, the USBWA continues its national player of the week program, which has been affiliated with the Oscar Robertson Trophy since the 2009-10 season. Broome was previously the USBWA National Player of the Week on Feb. 5, 2024. He is the second-ever player in program history, next to Walker Kessler, to be honored with the national weekly award and the only one to receive it twice.

🔼 Challenge Accepted. The sixth and final game of Auburn’s three-week road trip will take place tonight when the Tigers take on the Virginia Cavaliers in the women’s basketball SEC/ACC Challenge. Game time is 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT at John Paul Jones Arena.

This is the second year of the SEC/ACC Challenge. Last season, Auburn defeated Clemson 83-53 at home to clinch a tie between the leagues in the last game played of the event.

🔼 Toe to Toe. Hundreds of Auburn fans brought The Jungle to Cameron Indoor Stadium, helping the second-ranked Tigers get off to a fast start before No. 9 Duke took control, winning 84-78 Wednesday in the SEC/ACC Challenge.

Trailing by seven points at the half, Auburn fell behind by 12 early in the second half before whittling away at Duke’s lead, pulling within two points three times down the stretch.

Auburn (7-1) returns to Neville Arena Sunday to play Richmond at 11 a.m. CT—the first game of a doubleheader that features Auburn women’s basketball against UAB Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.

🔼 Talent Comes in Threes. Three Tigers have been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region Team as Anna Haddock, LJ Knox and Olivia Woodson were all recognized for their efforts during the 2024 season, the USC office announced Tuesday. Haddock receives her fourth nod as an All-Region player, while Knox and Woodson earn their first.

It is the first time the Tigers have placed three players on the All-Region team since 2021 and the first time all three field player lines have been represented since 2016.
