Bodda Getta Daily Brew 11/22: Talking Bama Turkey

Coach Freeze says anything can happen this Saturday in the Iron Bowl.

Good morning. "We quickly have to turn the page and put that behind us," football head coach Hugh Freeze said of the loss to New Mexico State in a recent presser. "We all know what the Iron Bowl means to so many, and you can fix your feelings a whole heck of a lot with a good performance in that game.”

The Iron Bowl is a game where you can throw the records out. The last three times Alabama has played in Jordan-Hare Stadium, the Crimson Tide was ranked No. 5 or higher. Auburn won two of the three, and the other one (2021) went to four overtimes before Alabama ultimately prevailed.

"I think they'll even be at another level come Saturday,” Freeze said of Auburn fans.

🔼  A Pre-Thanksgiving Thrashing. Auburn scored the first dozen points on its way to a 34-point halftime lead in a resounding 84-54 victory over Alabama A&M Tuesday at Neville Arena, the Tigers' fourth consecutive win.

The 12-0 start was a preview of coming attractions, including a 7-0 spurt that gave the Tigers a 15-point lead and a 19-0 run late in the first half that overwhelmed the visiting Bulldogs.

Chaney Johnson led Auburn with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting in 17 productive minutes. Aden Holloway added 13 points, while Jaylin Williams and Johni Broome each reached double figures with 10 points.

Dylan Cardwell grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, and Chad Baker-Mazara led the Tigers with six assists.

After Thanksgiving break, Auburn (4-1) hosts Virginia Tech next Wednesday, Nov. 29, in the ACC/SEC Challenge at 8:15 p.m. CT on ESPN2 at Neville Arena.

🔼 No Crouch Potatoes. Following arguably its most convincing victory of the season, Auburn (19-8, 9-7) remains on the Plains to host in-state rival Alabama (10-17, 0-16) tonight (Wednesday, Nov. 22). And although Thanksgiving is tomorrow, the Tigers will be about attacking—not relaxing.

Auburn's latest three-set win over LSU was its second sweep in SEC play this season. It was also the first victory over LSU since 2016 and the first straight-set win since 1999.

Hitting .344 on Sunday, Auburn reached the .300 mark for the 10th time in the 2023 campaign. The Tigers are 10-0 in such matches this season and 18-0 under Crouch when reaching .300.

Head coach Brent Crouch is on the doorstep of yet another milestone, as his next victory would be the 150th of his career. Also, since he took over the Tiger Volleyball program, Auburn is undefeated against Alabama, boasting a perfect 5-0 record.

First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. CT. For those unable to make it to Neville Arena, the contest will be streamed live on SEC Network Plus.

Auburn remains home for the final match of the regular season when the Tigers host No. 9 Arkansas on Friday, Nov. 24, at 3 p.m. CT.

🔼 Aces High. Auburn men's tennis signed national letters of intent with Alex Frusina and Joseph Phillips, head coach Bobby Reynolds announced on Wednesday.

"Both of these guys were atop our recruiting lists because of who they are as people more than their tennis ability,” said Reynolds. “They fit the Auburn mold of great integrity, work ethic and determination."

Frusina, who is a native of Conroe, Texas, is the sixth-ranked recruit in the United States according to Tennis Recruiting Network and is ranked 20th in the ITF junior rankings.

Phillips is ranked as the 12th recruit in the nation by Tennis Recruiting Network and is also a blue-chip recruit. The Alpharetta, Georgia native holds an ITF junior ranking of 108.

Frusina and Phillips will arrive on the Plains for the 2024-25 season.

🔼 Leaders Gonna Lead. Two Auburn student-athletes will participate in the Southeastern Conference's eighth annual SEC Career Tour, Nov. 28-30, in Atlanta.

Graduate student Ali DeSpain of the women's tennis team and junior Hallie Rush of the equestrian team will represent Auburn at the three-day event. DeSpain is working on her master's with the College of Education, while Rush is working on her degree in law and justice.

The goal of the career tour is to provide exposure for SEC student-athletes who are seeking career opportunities in various fields. The program allows student-athletes to connect with human resource recruiters, submit resumes for entry-level jobs and internships and gain valuable knowledge of professional branding.

The 28 student-athletes will begin the three-day event at the site of the SEC Championship Game, where they will meet with Mercedes-Benz Stadium staff and take a tour of the facility. Also included on the agenda during the week is a visit with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and executive coaching by Randy Hain, founder and president of Servian Partners and co-founder of the Leadership Foundry.

🔼 These Women Are on the Ball. Four members of the Auburn soccer team have been awarded College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors. Each woman will be eligible for the succeeding Academic All-American ballot.

Representing Auburn on this year's list are Sammie Brown, Anna Haddock, LJ Knox and Mallory Mooney.

"We are so proud of these four players for being great examples of what it means to be a student-athlete," Tigers head coach Karen Hoppa said. "They work diligently to take care of their business on the field and in the classroom. We're thankful that CSC has created a platform to celebrate well-rounded young women such as them."

To qualify for the Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.50 GPA, have a minimum of one year completed at their current institution and have played in at least 90% of their team's contests from the current season.

🤔 TIGER TRIVIA

Bowled Over. We’ve already talked about the legendary 2013 “Kick Six” play from 2013’s Iron Bowl when Chris Davis took a missed field goal back 109 yards with no time remaining to give Auburn a 34-28 win over No. 1 Alabama.

Today’s trivia question is about the announcer from this game, who excitedly exclaimed, “Auburn's gonna win the football game! Auburn's gonna win the football game! He ran the missed field goal back! He ran it back 109 yards! They're not going to keep them off the field tonight.” He followed that up with, “Oh my Lord in heaven.”

Today’s question—what was the name of that famous Auburn announcer?
