Bodda Getta Daily Brew 11/7: Miles Above the Competition

Miles Kelly made seven 3-pointers in his Auburn debut to help the Tigers overpower Vermont 94-43

Good Morning, Auburn Family. In his Auburn debut, Miles Kelly made seven 3-pointers, including five in fewer than four minutes, and the No. 11 Tigers overpowered Vermont 94-43 in Tipoff on The Plains Wednesday at sold-out Neville Arena.

Kelly scored 21 points to lead five Tigers in double figures. Denver Jones, who scored 16 points, was not surprised by his new teammates’ range.

“When I was at SEC Media Day and everybody asked me, ‘Who’s the best shooter on the team?’ I told them it was Miles,” Jones said. “’Y’all are going to see when the season starts.’ He showed tonight what he’s capable of.”

“He is an NBA-caliber 3-point shooter,” head coach Bruce Pearl said. “If he can see it, he can make it.”

🎥 WAREAGLE+: AUBURN FOOTBALL EVERY DAY

Auburn Football Every Day (S. 2, Ep. 9)
A look back at Auburn and Vanderbilt, a feature on center Connor Lew, a flashback to the 2004 season and a recap of the 2004 football team reunion.

🔼 Coach J Leads the Way. Auburn women’s basketball head coach Johnnie Harris will be inducted into the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Hall of Fame next spring. In two seasons at UAFS, she helped the program to a 34-8 overall record. The 2002-03 team went 26-2 and won the Bi-State Conference championship.

Harris served as assistant coach under legendary head coach Louis Wharton—for whom the UAFS Hall of Fame is named—from 2001-2003. While she was on the staff, the Lions won a Bi-State Conference championship in 2003, and the players she signed helped take UAFS to the NJCAA Final Four in 2004.

🔼 Bow Down. Auburn assistant coach Ira Bowman will be inducted into the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame. Bowman, in his seventh season on head coach Bruce Pearl’s staff, played at Penn during the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons.

During his first year with the Quakers, Penn went 22-6 overall and 14-0 in Ivy League play en route to its third-straight Ancient Eight title. Bowman was second-team All-Ivy that season. As a senior, Bowman was the Ivy League Player of the Year and first-team All-Philadelphia Big 5 as he led the Quakers to a 17-10 record that included a 12-2 mark in Ivy play.

Following his Penn career, Bowman enjoyed a professional playing career that included stints with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and Atlanta Hawks.

🔼  Sack Attacks. Getting to the quarterback was a theme in Week 9 for Auburn’s pro contingent, as Carl Lawson and Jamien Sherwood tallied two sacks apiece in their respective games.

Carl Lawson, DE, Dallas Cowboys

With pass-rushers Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence still unavailable for the Cowboys, Lawson stepped up on Sunday with a two-sack performance against the Atlanta Falcons. He forced a fumble on one of his sacks recovered by teammate Donovan Wilson. [Watch the play in action on X/Twitter] Lawson’s PFF grade of 78.3 was the second-highest on the team. He now has 29.5 career sacks through his first seven NFL seasons.

🔼 Sonny With a Chance of Retirement. Legendary Auburn men’s basketball coach Sonny Smith is retiring from his duties as radio analyst for Auburn men’s basketball games. Smith has provided commentary for Auburn men's basketball on the Auburn Sports Network since 2012.

Smith was Auburn's head coach from 1978-89, guiding the Tigers to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 1984-88, the most consecutive in school history.

Smith will be honored for his contributions before the Auburn men’s game against Richmond on Dec. 8 at Neville Arena.

“After years courtside as both a coach and a broadcaster, it is time to pass the mic and reflect. That front-row seat was more than a job; it was love for the game.” - Sonny Smith, Auburn MBB radio analyst

🔼 Walkin’ on Sunshine. Justin Jones has been announced as a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, given to the most outstanding player who began his career as a walk-on.

🔼 Stakes Are High. Auburn’s Ava Hrastar and Ava Esposito will compete for bids to the NCAA Singles Championship this week at the ITA South Sectional Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia. Six singles players from the tournament will earn a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship. All four semifinalists and two quarterfinal playoff winners will receive the bids.

Both Hrastar and Esposito will be in the field of 32 players vying for the singles sectional title. The event will begin today, with the finals scheduled for Sunday. The first round, second round and first round of consolation matches will be played today. The quarterfinals and consolation quarterfinals round will take place on Friday, the semifinals and consolation semifinals will be held Saturday and both the main draw finals and consolation finals will wrap up the event on Sunday.

🔼 Court is in Session. Auburn junior Billy Blaydes and freshman Alex Frusina will take part in the ITA South Sectional Singles Championship, which will be played today through Sunday in Tallahassee, Florida. Both Tigers will be playing for bids to the NCAA Singles Championship that will take place later in the month.

Six singles players will receive bids to the NCAA Singles Championship through the tournament. All four main draw semifinalists and two quarterfinal playoff winners will punch their tickets to the singles championship. Blaydes has already earned a spot in the NCAA Doubles Championship after he and partner Will Nolan claimed the doubles title at the ITA Southern Regional Championships last month.

Fall Ball, Y’all. Mark those calendars!
