Bodda Getta Daily Brew 11/4: Sunny With a Chance of Winning
The forecast for the Auburn MBB season is looking fantastic after Friday's exhibition win over FAU
Good Morning, Tigers. Two winners emerged from sold-out Neville Arena Friday: the No. 11 Auburn basketball team, which beat Florida Atlantic 102-70, and Auburn University’s Melton Scholars Program, the exhibition’s beneficiary.
Miles Kelly and Johni Broome scored 15 points each to pace six Tigers in double figures. Freshman Jahki Howard scored 14 points, Denver Jones scored 13 and freshman Tahaad Pettiford added a dozen.
🗣 “To sell it out like we did, I can’t begin to tell our fanbase how grateful I am. What we did tonight for the Melton Scholars is incredible.” - Bruce Pearl, head coach

🔼 Anna’s Bananas. Auburn soccer senior Anna Haddock highlights the Tigers’ yearly conference award-winners as the 2024 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a member of the All-SEC First Team, the league office announced Sunday. Defender LJ Knox and forward Olivia Woodson were also recognized as second team members. It is the first time since 2021 that three Auburn players were recognized at once.
It is Haddock’s fourth time being named to an All-SEC team and her second time on the first team (2021). On the field, she’s tallied five goals, including four game-winners and a whopping 11 assists.
🔼 Taking It in Stride. Auburn freshmen duo Nickson Chebii and Brenda Jepchirchir led the Auburn cross country teams to strong finishes at the SEC Cross Country Championships. The men finished seventh with 175 points, while the women took eighth with 223 points. Chebii and Jepchirchir ran their best races of the season, leading both programs to finish in the top eight at the conference championships for the first time since 2015.
Three-time SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipient senior Ryan Kinnane delivered a strong showing with the best 8k time of his collegiate career (23:02.30). In his final SEC cross country meet, his 14th place finish earned all-SEC honors for the third consecutive year.
On the women’s side, Jepchirchir crossed in 5th place at 19:13.60 to lead the Tiger women. She was the first freshman finisher among all competitors.
🔼 Good Will Hunting. Auburn senior Will Nolan won his respective singles flight at the Wake Forest Fall Invite over the weekend in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Nolan won each of his four matches to claim the flight title.
Nolan started his run with a three-set win over Keegan Rice of Virginia on Friday. A couple of straight-set victories over Wake Forest’s Cornelius Shalmi and Duke’s Remi Dugardin on Saturday then punched his ticket to the flight’s finals against Lucas Andrade da Silva of South Carolina. In Sunday’s final match, Nolan dropped the opening set before bouncing back to win the next two for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win. With the four victories, Nolan has a 7-3 singles record this fall.
🔼 Cowgirls Down. The No. 1 Auburn equestrian team put together a big performance on the road, coming home with a 13-7 victory at No. 4 Oklahoma State Friday afternoon. The win pushed the Tigers to 5-0 on the season, and the team took three of four events vs. the Cowgirls, going 7-3 in Jumping Seat and 6-4 in Western.
“We’ve been the same team at home and on the road, which speaks to the preparation and leadership of this group.” - Jessica Braswell, head coach
🔼 Cease and Assist. A late goal from senior Mallory Mooney following the record-breaking 43rd assist of senior Anna Haddock’s career was not enough to spark a late comeback for No. 24 Auburn as the Tigers fell 2-1 to LSU Sunday evening in the first round of the SEC Tournament in Pensacola, Florida.
Up next, Auburn turns its eyes toward the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers learn their postseason path during the NCAA Selection Show set for Monday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m. CT.
🔼 Bella’s Block Party Not Quite Enough. Behind two double-doubles and a team-high 18 kills from Bella Bell, Auburn (14-8, 4-7) nearly pulled off the win at Arkansas (15-7, 5-5). However, a late rally from the home side saw the Razorbacks take the match 3-2 (23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-11).
Early and often, it was the Orange and Blue block that made their presence known inside Barnhill Arena. Behind three rejections from Bella Bell alone, the Tigers held the Razorbacks to just .200 hitting in the opening frame. Chelsey McCurdy and Jasmine Okeoma also joined the block party as Auburn finished with four total team blocks. When the dust settled, Auburn secured 15.0 total team blocks, the third most in any match this season.
🔼 Playing Fast and ‘Loosa. Four tigers finished participating in the Roberta Alison Fall Classic on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Auburn players claimed SIX/SEVEN singles wins and three doubles victories during the two-day event.
Up next, Ava Esposito and Ava Hrastar will play for a bid to the NCAA Singles Championship in the ITA South Sectional Championship from Nov. 7-10 in Athens, Georgia.
🔼 “Let’s Finish Strong.” Back home for the first time since September, Auburn outgained Vanderbilt but struggled on third down in a 17-7 loss to the Commodores Saturday at sold-out Jordan-Hare Stadium.
“The defense played outstanding and gave us a chance to win the game. Offensively and special teams-wise, we’re not playing at a high enough level to win these games … In life, how you finish matters. Let’s finish strong.” - Hugh Freeze, head coach
