Bodda Getta Daily Brew 11/26: Maui Madness

Johni Broome's tip-in with one second remaining gave Auburn MBB the win over Iowa State, sending them to the semifinals

Good Morning, Auburn Family. Johni Broome’s tip-in with one second remaining gave No. 4 Auburn an 83-81 come-from-behind victory over No. 5 Iowa State Monday in the Maui Invitational, the second biggest comeback in the Bruce Pearl era and the Tigers’ second top-five win this season.

Auburn overcame an 18-point deficit, one point shy of the Tigers’ 19-point comeback win at Ole Miss in 2020.

“Our kids didn’t quit,” Pearl said.

The Tigers (5-0) take on the winner of Monday’s late game between No. 12 North Carolina and Dayton in the semifinals at 10 p.m. CT tonight on the Auburn Sports Network from Lahaina Civic Center.

🎥 WAREAGLE+: TALKING TIGERS

Talking Tigers - Palmer Cup
After Auburn Men’s Golf won the NCAA Championship last spring, a trio of Tigers men & women set out to represent the United States in the Arnold Palmer Cup. Anna Davis, Jackson Koivun and Brendan Valdes were part of the winning American squad that played in Ireland. Tied at 18 on the final day, Koivun won his match with birdies on 17 and 18 to clinch the title.

Auburn golfers Anna Davis, Jackson Koivun and Brendan Valdes are featured in this Talking Tigers Podcast.

🔼 Duly Noted. Auburn standouts Jarquez Hunter and Cam Coleman have earned Southeastern Conference weekly honors. Hunter, a senior running back, is the league’s offensive player of the week. Coleman, a first-year receiver, is the freshman of the week.

In Auburn’s 43-41 four-overtime win over Texas A&M Saturday, Hunter scored three TDs and rushed for 130 yards on 28 carries in his Jordan-Hare Stadium finale. Coleman scored two touchdowns in the first half, a 63-yarder and a 15-yarder, recording his second straight 100-yard game with seven receptions for 128 yards.

Quarterback Payton Thorne also earned national recognition as one of the Davey O’Brien Award’s Great 8. Thorne threw for 301 yards and a pair of TD passes, giving him 20 for the season.

🔼 Fast But Not Furious. Following an outstanding performance at the 2024 NCAA Cross Country Championships, freshman Brenda Jepchirchir secured U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America honors. Athletes earned All-America distinctions by finishing in the top 40 in their gender’s respective races at the championships this past Saturday in Madison, Wisconsin.

In her debut season for the Tigers, Jepchirchir has earned SEC Women’s Runner of the Week, SEC Women’s Second Team, SEC Women’s All-Freshman Team, SEC Women’s Freshman of the Year and USTFCCCA All-Region honors.

🔼 Hard-Hitting Softball News. A pair of home tournaments and a slate of midweek contests against in-state and regional foes highlight Auburn softball’s non-conference schedule as the program finalized its 2025 schedule. The Tigers open their 2025 campaign at Jane B. Moore Field, hosting Southern Illinois, North Carolina and Appalachian State for the Tiger Invite on Feb. 7-9.

🔼 Forward Momentum. Auburn Baseball recently completed its fall schedule, including exhibition wins against Florida State and Valdosta State and two Fall World Series, and is now fully focused on the 2025 season.

🗣 “It’s been great to bring in a highly-rated recruiting class and to see us trying to get up off the mat and get back to doing what we’ve done a couple of years prior. We’ve had a good, healthy chip on our shoulder.” - Butch Thompson, head coach

🐅 ONE BIG THING

Sullivan’s Travels. Yesterday marked the anniversary of QB Pat Sullivan becoming the first Heisman Trophy winner in Auburn's program history in 1971. That year, he led the Tigers to a 9-0 start.

As a junior at Auburn in 1970, he led the nation in total offense with 2,856 yards (2,586 pass/270 rush), leading the Tigers to a 9-2 record and top-10 ranking, teaming with receiver Terry Beasley to create the SEC's most feared passing combination.

"Sullivan to Beasley" became a fabled moniker in Auburn lore, with No. 7 connecting with No. 88 for 1,051 yards, 52 receptions and 11 touchdowns to lead the SEC in 1970. Sullivan and Beasley's uniform numbers, along with 1985 Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson's No. 34, are the only three Auburn jerseys to be retired.
