Bodda Getta Daily Brew 11/11: What Away Game?

2,500 Auburn fans trekked to Texas to witness the 74-69 victory over No. 4 Houston

Good Morning, Auburn Family. With an estimated 2,500 Auburn fans trekking to Texas, freshman Tahaad Pettiford and senior Johni Broome took over down the stretch to lead the No. 11 Tigers to a come-from-behind 74-69 win over No. 4 Houston Saturday at Toyota Center.

Fans chanted, “It’s Great to be an Auburn Tiger,” as time expired after Auburn outscored Houston 46-36 in the second half and made 7 of its last 8 shots.

“Our guys stepped up,” head coach Bruce Pearl said. “Johni was absolutely unstoppable. A historic win. We needed this. I was so pleased with our competitiveness.”

🎥 WAREAGLE+: TALKING TIGERS

Talking Tigers - Josh Wetzel
He was politely asked to leave two different schools before he settled on a career in the Army. Josh Wetzel came from a family of grandfathers, uncles and his father, who served this country. While in Afghanistan, he stepped on an improvised explosive device and lost both legs. He still wanted to go back and serve with his unit.

While at Walter Reed, the lifelong Tigers fan felt the Auburn Family reach out to him. After two years, he came to the Plains and earned his bachelor’s degree. Wetzel now works as Auburn Athletics Assistant Director of Social Media Strategy. On this Veteran’s Day, Josh Wetzel tells his Auburn story in this Talking Tigers Podcast.

🔼 Revisiting Perfection. As he’d done two decades earlier on 28 occasions from 2002-05, former Auburn receiver Ben Obomanu lined up with his teammates to Tiger Walk down Donahue Drive toward Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The 2004 SEC champions, Auburn’s Hard Fighting Soldiers, returned to the Plains Nov. 1-2 to celebrate and reminisce on the 20th anniversary of their 13-0 season. They were recognized on Pat Dye Field during Auburn’s game against Vanderbilt, an ovation two decades in the making.

“Those stories about some of those big games: the Iron Bowl, the LSU game, which was a turning point in our season,” said Obomanu. “We all still remember those plays very vividly and can describe what we were doing on some of those plays.”

“We had a lot of people come back for their last year who could have gone on to the NFL,” said the 2004 head coach, Tommy Tuberville. “You came back, you played your tail off, and you made people proud.”

🔼 Tigers Set the Tone. Reaching the century mark for the first time in 16 years, Auburn gave head coach Johnnie Harris a record-setting birthday present Friday, overwhelming Virginia University of Lynchburg 128-36 at Neville Arena. Auburn set records for most points in a quarter (37), half (68), total points (128) and margin of victory (92).

“Wanted to set the tone,” Harris said. “We knew it could be a lopsided game. We wanted to execute and work on stuff we’ve worked on in practice.”

🔼 Can’t Touch This. On a nice Saturday on the Plains in front of over 1,000 Auburn faithful, the No. 1 Auburn equestrian team faced rival and No. 2 Texas A&M and came away with a dominant 15-4 victory over the Aggies

The Tigers (6-0, 2-0 SEC) held a tight 5-4 lead at intermission following Flat and Reining before putting on a show in the second half, taking all 10 possible points between Fences and Horsemanship.

🔼 Dubs For the Cubs. Keegan Thompson (Chicago Cubs) Roundup: 👇🏼
2024 MLB (24 games): 2-1, 2.67 ERA, 30.1 IP, 19 H, 12 R/ 9 ER, 18 BB, 36 K, .224 B/AVG
2024 MiLB (20 games): 2-1, 2.96 ERA, 27.1 IP, 15 H, 11 R/9 ER, 10 BB, 38 K, .161 B/AVG

A fourth-year big leaguer and seventh-year pro, Thompson was an effective contributor at both the Triple-A and big league levels in 2024, turning in a combined 2.81 ERA in 44 appearances across the two levels. Despite spending time on the injured list at the end of June, Thompson nailed down two saves in two opportunities and registered a pair of holds with Chicago. The right-hander allowed just two earned runs in his final 15 appearances and 17.2 innings pitched with Chicago, and his 2.67 ERA and .178 batting average against at the big league level were both career bests.

🔼 Mad Skills Not Quite Enough. Madison Scheer tallied a team-high nine kills hitting a stout .320. However, Auburn (14-9, 4-8) couldn’t quite keep pace with No. 22 Florida (17-5, 8-3) as the Tigers dropped the roast test inside Exactech Arena, 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-19).

Scheer picked up where she left off the last time in the Sunshine State. The junior threw down four kills on her first six swings to come out firing early. The Tigers were passing relatively well, but unforced errors gave the Gators breathing room. Ultimately, the Florida offense hit at a high enough clip to take the opening frame and kick off the match with the early lead.
