Bodda Getta Daily Brew 10/29: Pounding the Rock

The football strategy that helped three Auburn football players earn SEC honors

Good Morning, Tigers. A trio of Auburn standouts, Jarquez Hunter, Izavion Miller and Keldric Faulk, earned SEC weekly honors after the Tigers’ 24-10 win at Kentucky. Hunter was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week, Miller was tabbed as Offensive Lineman of the Week and Faulk was selected as Defensive Lineman of the Week.

🔼 A Grand Opportunity. In the split second it takes Auburn’s setters to direct the volleyball to Madison Scheer, the junior outside hitter processes information, plots her attack and proceeds with ferocity.

On over a thousand occasions, the result is a point for the Auburn Tigers. In Auburn’s most recent match, Scheer became the fastest player in program history to record 1,000 career kills.

“A really good feeling,” said Scheer, the 16th Auburn player to reach the thousand-kill mark and the first since Brenna McIlroy (2015-18).

Read the feature on Scheer for more on her role in Coach Crouch’s plan for elevating the Auburn volleyball program, her volunteer shifts at Auburn High School and the “If You Build It, They Will Come” approach to filling the stands at the team’s matches.

🔼  Doing It the Wright Way. Even after rushing for 278 yards, the fourth-best performance in program history and the most in an FBS game this season, senior Jarquez Hunter still had enough energy for a celebratory backflip after Auburn defeated Kentucky 24-10 Saturday night.

Offensive lineman Jeremiah Wright said Hunter’s huge performance was by design.

“We told Coach, starting last week, ‘Let’s run the ball more. Let’s give No. 27 that rock more and pound the rock,’” Wright said. “Coach gave us an opportunity to show the run game more, and we did a great job of that.”

Read more on the key-but-perhaps-overlooked defense during the game against Kentucky, sack season and how these players can’t wait to get back to Jordan-Hare.

🔼 All New Court of Appeals. Last season, Auburn tennis supporters watched many familiar faces conclude collegiate tennis careers. The 2023-24 squad featured two veterans in their fifth seasons on the Plains, Tyler Stice and Finn Murgett, who led the Tigers to their first NCAA second-round appearance since 2012. On top of the two players in their fifth season at Auburn, Raul Dobai finished his time as a collegiate player and transitioned to the team’s coaching staff.

Now, Auburn fans will enjoy watching another group of young tennis players. Alex Frusina, Joey Phillips, Thomas Kennedy, and Max Pettingell arrived on campus in August and fit right into the Auburn Family. Each of them will be critical to the team’s success during the spring.
