Bodda Getta Brew 6/19: Getting Football Down Pat

The Countdown to Kickoff is down to 71 days. In honor of that number, we look back at Auburn legend Pat Sullivan, who won Auburn’s first Heisman in 1971.

Good Morning, Auburn Family. The Countdown to Kickoff is down to 71 days. In honor of that number, we look back at Auburn legend Pat Sullivan, who won Auburn’s first Heisman in 1971 after setting several school and SEC records while guiding the Tigers to a 9-1 regular season record.

“1971 was to be Sullivan’s greatest year. The Tigers started out 9-0, cementing his claim to the Heisman with 248 yards and four touchdowns against Georgia. He threw for 2,012 yards and 20 touchdowns, edging out Cornell running back Ed Marinaro to capture the trophy named for Auburn’s former football coach. He was once again honored as SEC Player of the Year and was All-SEC athletically and academically for the second straight year.”

🔼 Laid Down the Gauntlet. The SEC announced Wednesday each school's conference men's basketball opponents for the 2025-26 season.

Auburn will play a home and home series with Alabama, Arkansas and Ole Miss this upcoming season. The Tigers will host Kentucky, LSU, South Carolina, Texas, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt with road games coming at Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

League play tips off on Saturday, Jan. 3, and runs through Saturday, March 7. Each SEC team plays the other 15 teams at least once during league play.

🔼 What a Difference a Year Makes. After Jordan Szabo helped lead Texas A&M to its first national championship in May 2024, he had no time to celebrate with his alma mater. Szabo, who had accepted his first head coaching job at Auburn earlier in the Aggies’ postseason run, went from coaching a championship team to a roster of just three players.

“There was a lot going on, but I was really excited to get going and find a team,” Szabo recalled. “It was a little stressful with the number of roster spots we needed to fill, especially because the transfer portal in women’s tennis isn’t quite as prevalent as it is in some other sports.”

The 2025 Auburn Tigers made their mark in the books, setting many program records, including the most top-10 wins in a season (5).

🔼 He Walks the Walk. “Work, hard work.” That’s a phrase every Auburn person has ingrained in their mind. It’s a phrase that epitomizes senior running back Justin Jones

Coming to Auburn as a walk-on from Bessemer, Alabama, Jones started his collegiate career at UAB. Of the 48 people trying out for a spot, Jones was one of eight who made the team. He’s been contributing ever since.

Jones was named offensive scout team player of the year in 2022. He started on special teams in every game in 2023. And he became a reserve running back and special teams contributor in 2024. Because of that growth and hard work, Jones was named a Burlsworth Trophy nominee last year, an award given to the nation’s top walk-on.

🔼 Spilling the Tea ☕️. “We just love the camaraderie of all the women, and getting to meet the players and the coaches. It’s just a fun, fun weekend,” said one attendee.

🧐 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Bo Jackson!

"Sullivan to Beasley" became a fabled moniker in Auburn lore, with No. 7 connecting with No. 88 for 1,051 yards, 52 receptions and 11 touchdowns to lead the SEC in 1970. Sullivan and Beasley's uniform numbers, along with 1985 Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson's No. 34, are the only three Auburn jerseys to be retired.
