Good Morning, Auburn Family. The second-fastest linebacker at the NFL Scouting Combine, Eugene Asante attracted attention with his blazing 4.48 40-yard dash.

“I think I opened some eyes but I’ve always got a chip on my shoulder,” Asante said. “I feel like a sleeper in every room I walk into. I’m excited to wake people up to the type of player I am.”

After serving on the scout team in 2022 following his transfer from North Carolina, Asante led the Tigers in tackles in 2023 before serving as a team captain last season. After his third and final season on the Plains, Asante led his Senior Bowl team with six solo tackles Feb. 1 in Mobile, then shifted to preparing for the Combine and Auburn’s March 24 Pro Day.

🔼 Now That’s a Good Lie. Thanks to the lowest opening round in Southeastern Conference Championship history, a masterful 16-under-par, No. 2 Auburn positioned itself on top of the leaderboard and seven strokes clear of second place during Wednesday’s first round of the 2025 SEC Championship.

Auburn’s 264 (-16) goes down as the second-lowest round ever in the history of the tournament and is the best since LSU went 17-under in 2014.

Sophomore Josiah Gilbert led the charge with a 6-under in his return to Sea Island. He trails the individual leader, Texas A&M’s Michael Heidelbaugh, by three.

🔼 On a Roll. A total of 85 Auburn student-athletes earned a selection to the 2024-25 Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll. The 2024-25 Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll includes the sports of basketball, equestrian, gymnastics, and swimming & diving. It is based on grades from the 2024 Spring, Summer and Fall terms.

Women’s swimming and diving led the way with 25 selections with men’s swimming and diving following with 20. Equestrian boasted 17 honorees. Gymnastics added 11 with men’s basketball and women’s basketball following with seven and five, respectively.

🔼 It’s Go Time. For the 30^th time in program history, the Auburn women’s golf team has received a bid to the NCAA Championship. The Tigers have been selected to participate in the NCAA Gold Canyon Regional as the 3-seed. The regional, hosted by Arizona State, will take place May 5 through May 7.

The top five finishing teams from each of the six regional sites across the country will advance to the 2025 NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. Last season, the Tigers won the NCAA Auburn Regional by four strokes to punch their ticket to the championship, where they became national quarterfinalists.

🔼 And It’s Goooonnnneee! With the game scoreless through seven innings behind dominant pitching performances on both sides, Auburn softball used a Nelia Peralta home run in the eighth to secure a 1-0 win over South Alabama Wednesday night at Jaguar Field.  

Haley Rainey and SJ Geurin combined for Auburn’s first one-hitter since Maddie Penta and Annabella Widra one-hit Chattanooga on May 18, 2024, at the 2024 Tallahassee Regional. Rainey tossed five no-hit frames in her start and relied on her defense to get outs. She issued three walks in the outing. 

🔼 Staying In His Lane? Nah. Senior Mason Mathias has been named First Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Communicators. 

Mathias, an All-American and Alabama native, was recently named a H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Post Graduate Scholarship nominee by the Southeastern Conference. A mechanical engineering student, Mathias owns a 4.00 cumulative grade point average and was named the Men’s SEC Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year. His 8:52.41 in the 1000 free against Alabama was the second-fastest time in program history.

🔼 This Team is Stacked. Three members of the Auburn women’s tennis team have received postseason honors from the SEC. Auburn junior DJ Bennett was named first team All-SEC and junior Angella Okutoyi was tabbed second team All-SEC. Auburn freshman Merna Refaat was named to the conference’s All-Freshman team.

Bennett has now been honored by the SEC in each of her three seasons on the Plains. She was named SEC All-Freshman in 2023 and second team All-SEC in 2024. Okutoyi has now received a second team All-SEC selection in back-to-back seasons.
